NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) are the group of engineering colleges that are famous for their high standard of studies. Both of these have declared as institutes of national importance. The dream of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru led to the establishment of 14 RECs which were later known as NITs. Overall, there is a total of 30 NITs across the whole country whereas the total number of IITs in the whole country is 16. IITs vs NITs is a big debate in our country. We have a few pointers for you. 🙂 Previously All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was the mode of getting admission in NITs, while IIT-JEE was the mode to get admission in IITs, but now both these entrance exams are replaced by a common exam called as JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). Both these groups of institutes offer degrees in various fields of engineering and technology.

IITs vs NITs:

Both IITs and NITs have immensely contributed in raising the standards of studies in the country and have played a major role in India’s growth in technology and science at the global level. But the comparison between IITs and NITs is inevitable to prove which one is more supreme. The comparison also helps the engineering aspirants to understand the best options available. The comparison is needed to be unbiased, while comparing the superiority of one institution over the other lead into making of wrong choices by the young engineering aspirants. In order to study in the right engineering institute you need to evaluate the merits and demerits of the institution carefully.

Quality of education offered

When it comes to the quality of education provided IITs are ahead of the NITs. The professors in the IITs are better and more qualified than the NITs. The way of education and approach is also better in IIT, but it doesn’t mean that NITs are not good. Both IITs and NITs are extremely good in providing education and producing good engineers, but at the same time the top IIT colleges have an edge because of their high standard of studies.

Production of young leaders and founders

There have been founder of companies in India and abroad from both IITs and NITs and they are considered to be as a perfect benchmark by their institutes to prove themselves superior over the others. The research conducted in the US proved that IITians are among the leading founders of the top startups in America. IITs are the only non US university with most number of founders of companies in the US. NITs are also not behind in producing the leaders, the students from various NITs have also set up many startups in India and even in abroad. Flipkart, a leading e-commerce was established by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, who were IIT-Delhi pass outs. Arjun Malhotra is the co-founder of HCL Technologies and is an IIT-Kharagpur graduate. Simply 360 is a social media monitoring and analytics platform which was founded Bhupendra Khanal, who completed his studies from NIT-Durgapur. Microland technologies was started by Pradeep Kar, who completed his education from NIT-Nagpur.

Notable places in reputed companies

Both IIT and NIT are equally responsible for the growth of the country in the fields of science and technology. Both IIT and NIT graduates are known to have achieved notable positions in leading companies both in India and abroad. Soumitra Dutta is an IIT-Delhi pass out who it the Dean of Cornell University’s Management School. G.V. Loganathan completed his studies from IIT-Kanpur and is currently a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. R.K. Wanchoo studied at NIT Srinagar and is an executive director in BHEL, Hyderabad. Chitanjan Sahay completed his education from NIT Jamshedpur and is Chairman of Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Hartford.
