Information Technology Courses After 12th Grade:
Commerce stream students have been asking around questions about a technical course that they want to pursue after completing 12th standard. They want to know whether it is possible to pursue B.Sc. Information Technology courses after 12th Commerce.
In this article, you will be reading about the prospects associated with pursuing B.Sc. Information Technology courses after completing 12th commerce stream. You will be reading about limitations, requirements and alternative courses.
About B.Sc IT, course duration and avg. salaries
The Bachelor of Information Science degree is distinctly different from a general B. Sc. The Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology, however, is a 4-year program and the degree awarded is referred to as B.Tech or B.E. One can apply for BSc IT after completing HSC or after completing Engineering Diploma.
Course Duration: 3 years
Average Salary pa: INR 2-4 lakhs
Possibilities
Though B.Sc. IT is treated as a Science stream course, many Colleges also are offering admission to Commerce stream students. But there are some conditions and limitations though.
In case of most Colleges offering admission to Commerce stream students (for B.Sc. IT program), they have an eligibility criteria. As per the criteria, the student must have had Mathematics and/or Computer subjects during 11th and 12th Commerce stream schooling! Students who satisfy this criteria may land a seat in such Colleges, when it comes to B.Sc. IT course. There are, however, other Colleges too, which don’t go by this eligibility criteria. If you don’t satisfy the above condition, you may try your luck at such a College! You may also give alternative courses a try too.
IT Opportunities after Commerce
Although a few universities do have specific requirements favouring senior secondary certificate or equivalent qualification holders with science stream subjects (specifically Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics(P.C.M.), there still are numerous universities in India & abroad which do allow for senior secondary certificate (10+2) or equivalent qualification holders in any stream to seek admission to the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology(BSc.-I.T.) program.
Another point worth mentioning is that some universities have a requirement of having studied mathematics as a subject in 10+2 by a candidate, some give preference to students who have studied Computer Science(C.S.) or Informatics Practices(I.P.) as a subject in 10+2, so, basically there is no universally applicable eligibility criteria for seeking admission to the BSc. – I.T. program in India, as well as, many countries abroad.
As far as the ability of someone with commerce subjects in 10+2 to comprehend & perform in the program is concerned, it again depends from university-to-university & their teaching style, methodology, & course structure of the institution teaching it is concerned, some take elementary knowledge as a given in their students & start off with the advanced material. Some, on the other hand, take a different approach & start bottom-up from scratch. If one has studied C.S. or Informatics Practices(& in some universities, mathematics) in 10+2 within the commerce stream, it would obviously prove beneficial, but even if one doesn’t have these, one may attempt to look for a university which does follow a ‘from-scratch’ teaching approach.
Lastly, I would like to advise anyone who hasn’t studied CS or IP as subjects in 10+2 & intends to seek admission to a BSc. – I.T. program to put in even the slightest effort in learning about basic coding. This, I believe will be an advantage for such BSc. – I.T. aspirants, who must focus on the right university to turn their possible disadvantage of not knowing much about the subject into a strategic advantage.
