6 Inspirational Movies Every Student Must Watch

Sometimes, all you need to do is unwind! Whether your assignments have piled up, you have had a mini vacation in the library, or you are considering suing someone for saying studying is supposed to be a cool thing, it’s time to switch off from the world. In India, while our munnis are getting ‘badnaam’ and sheilas are getting ‘jawaan’, the world of cinema (back home and globally) has been creating masterpieces. These are the kinds of inspirational movies that all students should have sitting on their shelves. All you have to do is grab some popcorn, watch the movie, and imbibe some wonderful lessons from them.

So, here are a few recommendations that every college student will relate to.

While so many of us were busy booking tickets for Sallu Bhai’s movies and going all gaga over his dabang performance, the next screen was showing a brilliant yet unconventional movie every student, or rather everyone should have watched. Nil Battey Sannata is a story about a mother-daughter relationship, and how a mother helps her daughter excel in academics.

Why should you watch it?

It’s a perfect blend of nautanki, life lessons, and mathematics. The film delivers the message that irrespective of one’s social status, everyone has a right to education, dream, and lead a better life.

The story is about a 20-year old young man Will Hunting(Damon) who works as a janitor at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and has an extraordinary intellect in mathematics and chemistry. The turn of events leads him to Sean McGuire (the terrific Robin Williams), a community college instructor and therapist who makes Will uncover his hidden talents.

Why should you watch it?

It teaches all students to believe in themselves, believe in people like McGuire who want to help, and know that “a mind, is a terrible thing to waste.”

  1. I AM KALAM (2010)

A cute boy, fondly called chotu, aspires to be like Abdul Kalam in the movie. The film cherishes the survival of the human spirit against all the odds and throws light on the need for underprivileged children’s education. It also shows a strong bond and friendship between a rich and poor boy.

Why should you watch it?

It’s a hatke movie, which every student can relate to. There’s a chotu in all of us, who idolizes someone or has a role model. It also sends across a strong message that every student should learn to be thankful that they are privileged enough to be able to study.

  • 3 IDIOTS (2009)

How could I not mention this movie? A benchmark of sorts, this movie turned to be a bible for engineering students. It’s about two friends who are searching for their long lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend (Aamir Khan) who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them “idiots”. No other movie helps you push through the difficulties of a complicated education system better than this movie. It speaks to millions of college students on a personal level.

Why should you watch it?

The movie is about 3 students who wanted to do something else and joined engineering because of parental pressure. It teaches students the truth of life and also says something very powerful: Chase excellence and success will follow you. You must keep walking on your path.

To see Mark Zuckerberg’s story as he turned from a Harvard student to a multi-millionaire will make you want to become a genius and be awesome like him. The movie is about how he creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook. But he is later sued by two brothers who claimed he stole their idea.

Why should you watch the movie?

The movie tells you what dreams are made of. Every student can make it big, but the road to success is not going to be easy. Also, the legal drama behind the actual story of the Facebook foundation is well portrayed and worth watching.

It’s about how five students from completely different backgrounds open up to each other, only to realize that the stereotypes they’ve been pushing through all their lives are just that; stereotypes. The breakfast club is also about an unlikely friendship forming out of a group of misfits. It shows that as students, you will be put into several classes full of strangers, have to attend social events with people you have not known your whole life, and perhaps even have to live with someone you have never met before.

Why should you watch it?

The message? Students can find fierce friends in the most unlikely of places, that you may have never even thought to look before. One should make the most of the university years and embrace new beginnings as that golden education time will never come back in life.
