JEE Counselling Trends 2018
This year’s JEE Advanced counselling results have proven unequivocally that IIT Bombay is the most sought-after engineering institute in the country today. IIT Delhi is not far behind. Out of the top 100 rank-holders, 65 have opted for IIT Bombay, while 31 have chosen IIT D. From the top 500 students, IIT-B has got 201 students, while IIT-D has got 137. Here, we have a table showing the number of students among the top 100 rankers who joined the top 5 old IITs in the last 3 years:
|College||IIT Bombay||IIT Delhi||IIT Madras||IIT Kharagpur||IIT Kanpur|
Let’s go into the reason behind this year’s JEE counselling trends.
A couple of decades ago, IIT Kharagpur used to be the most preferred IIT among engineering aspirants, and admission to IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur was considered a tremendous achievement. Yet, IIT B and IIT D have succeeded in attracting most of the top performers in JEE Advanced in the last few years.
The ability of an IIT to draw the best students is shaped by perceptions about the faculty, the placement scenario, the general culture, and most importantly, the extent of innovation in the institute’s approach. Let us have a quick look how IIT Bombay has made a mark in these areas.
The institute is most famous for its Computer Science and Engineering department, which has extremely competent faculty members. Invariably, a majority of the top 50 rank-holders in the JEE Advanced examination join the CSE department at IIT B. SINE (Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship), IIT B’s incubation platform, provides opportunities for tech-based start-ups. Recently, Director Devang Khakhar unveiled new facilities at the IIT B Central Library to aid visually-challenged students, thus encouraging a feeling of social inclusion. Word has it that IIT Bombay might introduce Wi-Fi based smart classrooms as well as tests in the near future.
All these factors have together helped IIT Bombay to become the premier institute in the country. You can read all about IIT Bombay here.
This is just one face of the JEE counselling trends of 2018. Another not so fortunate result of JEE counselling was that over 100 seats were left vacant this year. Owing to this there were considerable upgradations in candidates’ final allotment. For instance, one of the candidates got her seat shifted from IIT Guwahati electrical, in her first allotment, to IIT BHU Maths & Computing after shifting.
