JEE 2018 Counselling and Seat Allotment will be held by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for granting admissions to IITs and ISM Dhanbad. JoSAA was initiated in 2015 academic year only. Earlier, admissions to IITs were done through JAB (Joint Admission Board), while CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) was responsible for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
This article will give you information about all the crucial things you must know before you enter this process of JEE 2018 Counselling.
JEE 2018 Counselling: Things You Should Know
What is JoSAA?
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2018 has been set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate the JEE 2018 counselling for admissions to 97 institutes for the academic year 2018-19. This includes 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 20 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). Admission to all the academic programs offered by these Institutes will be made through a single platform. JoSAA is basically responsible for counselling and seat allocation of candidates who have qualified in JEE Main 2018 and JEE Advanced 2018.
JEE 2018 Counselling: Important Dates
The JEE 2018 Counselling will begin from 4th week June 2018. Earlier, it was supposed to begin from 20 June 2018 but now that the JoSAA 2018 counselling is being held, the date has been pushed back. The JEE Main 2018 AIR will be released on 23 June 2018 and only after that, the combined counselling for both, JEE Main 2018 and JEE Advanced 2018, will be conducted.

JEE 2018 Counselling Eligibility Criteria
Though all the JEE entrants may apply for the JEE 2018 Counselling, but admission in IITs and ISM-Dhanbad will only be granted to JEE Advanced qualifiers. However, these qualifiers will have to fulfil the conditions below:
- Candidate must have secured an acceptable rank in JEE Advanced 2018.
- The candidate either should have secure an aggregate of 75% (70% for SC, ST or PwD) in the qualifying exam or should have secured position among top 20 percentile successful toppers.
- Candidates should note that for the criterion above, the aggregate marks only in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Language (Language paper in which candidates has secured higher marks) will be considered. If any of the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Language are not evaluated in the final year (e.g., in a 3-year diploma course), then the marks of that subject in the previous year will be considered to check the percentile and the percentage.
Candidates must also check the points given below to ensure that they are eligible for the admission into IITs and ISM.
- Candidates who failed in one or more subject in the qualifying examination are required to appear for the same in 2018 and must qualify it this time.
- If the Board awards only the letter grades, then the candidate should obtain a letter from the Board, stating the aggregate marks of the candidates. If such is not done, then the Joint Implementation Committee of JEE (Advanced) 2018 will take the decision on its own, which might or might not be in candidate’s favour.
- If, for the qualifying examination, the Board gives the marks of both class XI and XII, then only the marks of class XII will be considered.
- In case, the Board only provides the aggregate marks, then the aggregate marks will be considered.
Note: Candidates must note that the criterion above is applicable for the candidates, including foreign nationals.

Candidates will have to enter the desired branch and institute in which they seek admission. Choices have to be filled in decreasing order of the priority, during the registration. Candidates can add or delete, even rearrange, their choices as many times as they wish to and can also apply for multiple choices. Once the choices are filed, candidates are supposed to lock their choices for JEE Advanced 2018. Candidates are advised to choose the maximum number of courses. Aspirants seeking admission in Petroleum Engineering courses, and M.Sc. Tech. in Applied Geology should not be suffering from colour blindness.
Online Choice Filling and Locking
Step by step procedure for choice filling is as follows:
- Applicants are required to log in to fill their choices as per preferences of branches, courses and institutes. To log in, they need to enter the User ID (Registration No), JEE Advanced 2018 Roll No and Password.
- Candidates can change, edit, reorder their choices and add new ones till the final locking.
- Applicants should not forget to check and lock their final choices by the stipulated date. If they fail to do that, candidates’ choices will be locked by default.
- JEE Advanced 2018 Seat Allocation will be on the basis of the JEE Advanced 2018 All India rank (AIR) gained by the candidates.
- Candidates are required to fulfil additional fitness criteria for courses in Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering and related courses.
Important: ISM Dhanbad will now admit female candidates to Mining Engineering, Mining Machinery Engineering and related courses for 2018-19 session.

- JEE 2018 Counselling & Seat Allotment will be completed tentatively in three rounds (generally).
- Candidates are required to log in by using their User ID (Registration No), JEE Advanced 2018 Roll No and Password to check their Seat Allotment.
- They should check their JEE Advanced 2018 Seat Allotment at the end of every round.
- Seat allocation may change due to upgradation. Hence students must be careful.
- During the process of online seat allocation, the soft copy of the category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL) certificates uploaded at the time of registration or afterwards will be verified. If found unacceptable, such candidates will be considered as GE only if their score in the Paper-1 of JEE Main 2018 is above the declared cutoff marks.
Step 4 – Seat Acceptance Fee Payment
- Candidates need to then pay the seat acceptance fee for the allotted seats through SBI Net Banking/e-Challan.
- For provisional seat acceptance, students have to get all the documents verified at the reporting centre.
- Once that is done, they will be issued a provisional admission letter.
Note: For all candidates other than SC/ST/SC-PwD/ST-PwD/GEN-PwD/OBC-NCL-PwD, the seat acceptance fee is Rs. 45,000, while candidates belonging to SC/ST/SC-PwD/ST-PwD/GEN-PwD/OBC-NCL-PwD categories will have to pay Rs. 20,000 as seat acceptance fee.
Step 5 – Reporting to the Help Centre
- This is the last step in admissions for JEE 2018 counselling
- JEE 2018 counselling candidates have to report to the help centres (38 in total) with their original certificates and documents. List of the documents/certificates is mentioned below

Step 6 – Reporting to the allotted institute
The students who have confirmed their seats and verified their documents have to now report to the allotted institute on the specified dates to complete their admission formalities. They need to produce the original documents along with a set of copies and pay the balance fees.
For students who belong to states or Union Territories with no NIT, the Home State quota will be in the nearest NITs.
What about AAT?
Candidates who wish to join Architecture courses at the IITs, need to pass an Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT) conducted at the seven Zonal IITs. AAT 2018 is going to be conducted in June, 2018. Students will need to choose B.Arch at IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee as their choice during online counseling and register for the Aptitude Test June, 2018 too. The original admit card for the JEE Advanced 2018 will be used for AAT and AAT results will be declared by June, 2018. Only those students who clear this test will be considered for admission to the course. However, seats will be allotted solely on the basis of JEE Advanced AIR and category rank of a candidate.
What is Dual Reporting?
Dual Reporting is an important and often misunderstood part of JEE 2018 Counselling. It is the process of reporting twice, to switch seat allocated in one institute with the seat allocated in another one. Candidates will Dual Report when they will want to change the allotment from NIT + System Changes to an IIT/ ISM. In other words, candidates who have been allocated seats in NITs, IIITs or Other GFTIs but are looking forward to confirming the allocated seat in IITs/ISM, in the next round of counselling, are required report once again at IIT/ISM Reporting Center. Same has to be done by the candidates who wish to leave the seat in IIT/ISM, to confirm the seat allocated in NITs + System Change. He/she will also have to report again at the NITs + System Change Reporting Center. Candidates who will fail to do so will end up losing the seat in both NIT + System Change and IIT/ISM.
