JEE Main Cut-Off Scores
CBSE will be declaring the JEE Main Cutoff for 2018 in the last week of April after the declaration of results. Read on to know more.
The Joint-Entrance Examination (JEE) is inarguably the most anticipated and coveted examination in the country. Every year over 12 lakh candidates register for JEE seeking admissions to the various engineering colleges including the prestigious IITs and NITs. The examination is held over two stages – first the JEE Main and then JEE Advanced for those who successfully clear the first stage. This article will discuss JEE Main cutoff score.
This year, CBSE has decided to grant the eligibility to attend the JEE Advanced to only 2,20,000 candidates including all categories, who score above the cut off scores in JEE Main determined by CBSE- of course in addition to the other eligibility criteria mentioned for the exam. These cut off scores will be declared around the last week of April after the conclusion of all the offline and online JEE Main examinations.
JEE Main Previous Years’ Cutoff
It is crucial for students to know the previous years’ JEE Main Cut-Off as they will be able to get an idea of the JEE Main 2018 Cut-Off. The cutoff scores will be different for different categories and it is decided based on the total number of candidates to be admitted to attend JEE Advanced and the reservation pre-determined for the different categories. This means the 2,20,000 candidates mentioned will include best performers overall categories – General, OBC, SC and ST- the exact number of candidates from each category determined by reservation rules.
Candidates can get a fair idea of what cut off scores will be this year depending on the trends over last few years. This also depends on the difficulty level of the exam and the total number of candidates who actually took the exam. The JEE main cut off scores for the different categories over last few years are provided below:
JEE Main 2017 Cut-Off:
Category | Cut-Off |
General | 81 |
OBC | 49 |
SC | 32 |
ST | 27 |
PWD | 1 |
JEE Main 2016 Cut-Off:
Category | Cut Off |
General | 100 |
OBC | 70 |
SC | 52 |
ST | 48 |
JEE Main 2015 Cut-Off:
Category | Cut Off |
General | 105 |
OBC | 70 |
SC | 50 |
ST | 44 |
The JEE main cut off 2018 will be made available to everyone along with the result in the last week of April 2018. All the candidates who qualify will get the chance to move to JEE Advanced stage. The conducting body for JEE exams, CBSE, would be releasing the cut off scores for General, SC, ST and OBC-NCL categories separately. The JEE main 2018 cutoff would also depend on the difficulty level of examination, cut off trend for previous years, availability of seats and total number of candidates appearing in the examination.
Candidates need to score equal to or more than the cut off marks depending on the category to which they belong. As per the JEE main cut off trend, around 2,20,000 candidates will get selected for the JEE Advanced exam that is scheduled for May 20, 2018. A total of 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 20 IIITs and 18 GFTIs will be participating in the JEE main exam 2018 and they will then select candidates for admission in B.Tech and B.E. programmes.
JEE Main 2018 Expected Cutoff
Please note that the JEE Main 2018 cut-off marks for Paper-1 will be released by CBSE through online mode only. As discussed, cut-off marks depend on many factors like difficulty level of paper and number of students appeared in the exam. Students who score more than the cut-off marks will qualify the Paper-1 of JEE Main 2018. And the marks are as follows:-
Category | Cut-off score |
General | 85 |
Scheduled Caste (SC) | 35 |
Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 30 |
Other backward classes (OBC) | 50 |
Changes Made in Calculating the Cut-off Marks
CBSE has introduced a drastic change from the year 2017 and it will not give any importance to the marks of class 12th while deriving the JEE main cut-off score and rank of the candidate. The admission will be purely based on the rank of the candidate in JEE Advanced exam or JEE main rank. For being eligible, students must have scored at least 75% in their 12th standard qualifying examination (65% for reserved category candidates) or be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards. Also, he/she must have any one of the subjects from Chemistry or Biotechnology or Biology or Technical Vocational subject B.Arch. or B. Planning along with Physics and Mathematics being a compulsory subject in their 10+2.

Admission Procedure for Engineering Colleges
We all know that the JEE Main 2018 cut-off will be different for every category of students. These changes in the cut-off or rank will be based on the decision made by the Government standards for reservation. Since this exam has a seat reservation, the same trend will be followed by setting different cut-offs for various reserved categories. Additionally, this cut-off will change after every round of admissions in colleges.
The moment the cut-off gets declared for this year, qualified students would need to register for the online counselling under JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). JoSAA is responsible for conducting the joint counselling session to allocate seats to students in IITs, IIITs, NITs and GFTIs. There would also be an opening and closing rank in all institutions for all categories of students. Please note that the required ranks may fluctuate from one branch of engineering to the other.
JEE Main 2018 Counselling
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is an important conducting authority for JEE main counselling. Once the JEE main 2018 cutoff and rank list will get released, the counselling schedule will be announced. There will be many rounds as per the counselling process and students will be given pre-decided seats on the basis of their score and rank in the JEE main examination.
Once the cut off scores are announced, the eligible candidates have to immediately start their application procedures for JEE Advanced, as the application process usually happens in just under a week. You can read about JEE advanced registration here. Hope you did great in your JEE Main 2017 paper. Toppr wishes you All the best for the remaining exam season! The JEE Main cut off scores for PWD candidates of a particular category will be the same as other candidates of the same category. The ranks of JEE Main will be announced around the end of June. Also, one has to note these cut off scores are just to determine the eligibility to write JEE Advanced and doesn’t reflect on the rank list of JEE Main or admissions based on it.
