My Personal Timetable for JEE Main:

Do you often study for JEE while watching television or surfing the internet? Are you comfortable learning new concepts while WhatsApp (ing) or Facebook (ing)? Or is it your habit to lie on your bed, stare at the ceiling and go through your JEE study material? If you just said yes, then probably you have an extraordinary brain and have superpowers.

‘Our habits define who we actually are’ – but while preparing for JEE, students acquire some habits which may not be fruitful. If we talk in general terms, it is impossible to focus on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics while doing the things mentioned above. If you tend to dream away or want entertainment while studying, then you probably are committing a big mistake! Yes, the blunder of studying just aimlessly without making a timetable.

Why Did I Create a Timetable for JEE Main?

“Half of the battle is won if you start well” keeping this in mind, I started preparing for JEE few days after my 10th board results were out. My result was not that good, so I made up my mind to study seriously for JEE. The first thing I did was getting enrolled in a coaching class after consulting few of my seniors who had made it to the JEE. Their advice gave me more insights about the strategy and schedule I should follow. Doing more and more self-study was an important tip I got from them, and thus I made up my schedule accordingly.

Before I lay out the plan for you, let me tell you that it’s really very hard to get out of bed in the morning especially for studying. So, if you simply rely on the alarm of your clock, you might cheat yourself. You must get some external factor to help like asking your mother or your overenthusiastic little brother to wake you up. Let the breakfast include some light stuff (usually dry fruits & milk) and then sit to study for next two hours. An elaborate meal will only make you sleepy.

Now, coming to the daily schedule, please note that this is just a sample timetable I had followed and it can be modified to suit your needs. If you want to make some changes, then go for it. But the main concept of the timetable should not change. The aim should be to study for at least 10- 12 hours. I know it’s not possible to study with 100% efficiency but give your best shot, folks.

Timetable for JEE Main I Followed During Weekends/Holidays:

Time of the day Activity Study Type Topics Covered Total Hours
7:45 – 8:00 Wake up and freshen up/prepare for studying
8:00 – 10:30 Study New topics (learning) E.g. The chapter on magnetism 2.5 hours
10:30 – 11:00 Breakfast/Newspaper
11:00 – 2:00 Study Continuing the previously done topic E.g. Strengthening concepts of trigonometry 3 hours
2:00 – 3:30 Lunch and maybe sleeping for some time
3:30 – 6:00 Study Mock Tests/ Previous Years’ Question Papers Taking practice tests for 2-3 topics 2.5 hours
6:00 – 6:45 A short break, exercise, catch up with friends/ talk to friends over phone
6:45 – 8:45 Study Finishing one complete topic E.g. Attempting problems from a particular chapter/studying concepts 3 hours
8:45 – 9:30 Break, Dinner Or You could use this time for WhatsApp & Facebook
9:30 – 12:00 Study Revise already studied topic/make plans for the next day the last 15 min. E.g. Revise one chapter and make a record of all the chapters revised till date/today. 2.5 hours
00.00 – 00:30 Unwind for some time. (I used to watch my favourite television series before sleeping. It really helped me relax)

Timetable for JEE Main I Followed During College Days:

Time Activity Topics Covered
7:30 am Wake up and plan for the day
8:00 – 14:00 College hours (although I used to study for JEE even during my lectures whenever I found time for it) Organic chemistry, maths, mugging formulae, etc.
2:15 – 3:00 Lunch break Rest for some time
3:00 – 5:00 Study
5:00 – 6:00 Go for a walk, spend some time with friends (I used to play football, and it made my day literally)
6:00 – 6:30 Mug Formulas and equations Revise
6:30 – 8:30 Study
8:30 – 9:15 Dinner+ Leisure
9:15 – 11:15 Study  New concepts
11:15 – 12:00 Buffer time for pending chapters
12:00 – 12:30 Plan for the next day
12:30 onwards Sleep (Sometimes when I used to feel exhausted, I used to sleep early. So, Don’t torture yourself, it’s ok to let go sometimes.)

Sometimes, once in a month, I used to meet my friends (who were also preparing for JEE) to discuss the strategy of preparations. Also, I used to go through interviews of toppers to know what stuff worked for them.

I continued the schedule mentioned above till one month before JEE.

Disclaimer: The basic idea of this post is to teach you how to prepare a timetable for JEE Main. It’s not that you must follow the exact time given. For e.g. If you like to sleep early at 10 pm and get up early in the morning, then you can create a schedule accordingly.

To conclude, I’d like to mention a quote by Steve Jobs:

My favorite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.”

This is certainly my piece of advice for all JEE aspirants. The most valuable asset that the students have is “time”, and it should be used wisely in order to succeed.
