The Kishor Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) exam will be held on 06 Nov 2016. Students across the country are gearing up for this competitive exam as they want to put their best foot forward. One of the most coveted scholarship fellowship programs in basic science initiated by DST (Department of Science and Technology), Government of India, it was started in 1999. Its main aim is to encourage students to take up research careers in the areas of basic sciences, engineering, and medicine.

KVPY_logoKVPY offers scholarship and contingency grants up to the pre-Ph.D. level to selected students. It is administered by the Indian Institute of Science(IISc). In the year 2015-16, 881 students of class XI, 1554 students of class XII and 96 students of the first year of graduation qualified out of about one lakh students who appeared for the exam. The KVPY exam is done in two-stages – Aptitude Test and Interview.

For SA exam(Class 11), all four subjects are compulsory; however, for SX(Class 12) and SB(1st year Graduation) exam, you can appear for any 3 of the 4 subjects (in simple terms either biology or mathematics).

Today, we’ll be focusing on what you should study in Physics. To know about other subjects, eligibility, exam pattern, tips, tricks, etc., click here.

Important Books for KVPY

NCERT books are the best books not only for Physics but also for other subjects of the KVPY exam. H.C. Verma Vol 1 & 2 and I.E. Irodov can also be used for reference purpose. Also, solve as many KVPY past year papers and sample papers as you can and analyse your performance each time.

Points to Remember for SA Exam

Make sure that you are thorough with the class XI syllabus. The most important topics are Mechanics, Ray Optics, Electromagnetism.

Ray Optics and Electromagnetism are not there in the class XI syllabus. But there is no need to worry. The basic class X level knowledge in these two topics is enough. The less important topics like Thermodynamics, SHM, and Waves should preferably be completed from the class XI book.

Points to Remember for SB/SX Exam

For this exam, you need to be thorough up to class 12 physics.  Electrostatics, magnetism, optics rotational dynamics, fluidity waves and oscillations are very important for this exam. It doesn’t mean that you should neglect other topics; it’s important to cover all the topics.

The students in the 1st year of B.Sc. /B.S. /B.Stat. /B.Math. /Int. M.Sc. /M.S. are also eligible. It always helps to know about undergraduate physics.

Instead of factual knowledge, this examination is about your understanding and analytical ability. The questions will be based on fundamentals of physics and not on the subject knowledge. So, you need to think about the practical connotations of the question to arrive at an answer.

One important thing to keep in mind while you prepare yourself for this coveted fellowship examination is that your foundation in Physics, Chemistry and Maths needs to be very strong. A strong grasp over these subjects is what is going to fetch you marks and help you pass out with flying colors.
