Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), a student fellowship program funded and organized by the Department of Science and Technology, India is an attempt to encourage and support the youth of India in their journey in higher studies in the field of science and lead them onto the path of research. It has different streams – KVPY SA, SX and KVPY SB.
Monitored by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the program taps the talented youth and offers them with generous amount of fellowships and contingency grants till the pre-PhD levels. To make them more skilful in research, KVPY also offers them summer fellowship program across various institutes of the country.
While the KVPY SA and SX examinations are for the science students of XI and XII standards, the KVPY SB exam intends to pick the brightest minds from the 1st year of the undergraduate program in Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry in the degree programs of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.
However, studying any three of the above mentioned 4 basic science subjects makes the students eligible to appear for the examination.
During the first 3 years of the fellowship period (B.Sc/BS/1-3yrs of Integrated M.Sc.), the KVPY SB qualified students get a monthly fellowship of Rs. 5000 per month along with a generous annual contingency grant of Rs. 20,000. In the next two years of their academic period (M.Sc/MS/4-5 yrs of integrated M.Sc), the monthly fellowship goes up to Rs. 7000 per month, combined with a contingency amount of Rs. 28,000.
Apart from being able to take part in various national level summer fellowships, the KVPY fellows are eligible to have access to several National libraries as well as University libraries to expand their arena of knowledge in basic sciences.
For appearing in the KVPY SB exam, the students must fulfil the eligibility criteria of securing a minimum aggregate of 60% in the Science subjects in their XII standard examinations and a minimum of 60% in the final examination of the first year of the respective degree program (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S).
For the SC/ST students, the cut off percentage of the XII board and degree program first year examinations for being eligible to attend the exam has been relaxed to 50%.
The KVPY SB application form is available online and the application process generally begins following the publication of the Advertisement regarding the exam around the 2nd Sunday of July every year.

As the exam mainly tends to test the knowledge and understanding of the students and their ability to apply their scientific knowledge in analytical problems, there is no prescribed syllabus for the examination. In the KVPY SB examination, the students are generally tested for their in-depth knowledge of the syllabus upto their first year of degree program examination ((B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S).
The KVPY SB examination will be an aptitude based test that will be conducted in both Hindi and English across different centres throughout the country. The venue of the examination along with their respective seat numbers and exam admit cards will be uploaded in the official website in the 2nd week of October, 2016. The aptitude test will be held on 6th November, 2016.
The exam will be computer-based and the students will also get a mock exam link in order to get themselves familiar with the exam interface.
Provided the KVPY SB qualified students are able to maintain a good academic performance (60% or equivalent GPA) in every year of their degree program in the first attempt, their fellowship will be renewed. For SC/ST/PWD, this cut off percentage is 50%. If the KVP SB fellows fail to maintain this percentage, their fellowship will be stopped. However, if they maintain this academic quality in the next year examination, the fellowship will be renewed thereafter.
Solving the previous years’ question papers and developing a thoroughly good concept of Class XI/XII Science syllabus and the syllabus of the first year of degree examination can easily help the students to qualify the KVPY SB examination and avail all the opportunities associated with being a KVPY Fellow.
