Madras University

Madras University is considered the mother of almost all the old Universities of South India. Established in 1857, it is one of the three oldest universities in India (along with the University of Calcutta and the University of Mumbai). In recent years, after the establishment of various universities in the State and the demarcation of the University territories, the jurisdiction of Madras University has been confined to three districts of Tamil Nadu. The Madras University has grown from strength to strength while widening its teaching and research activities.

The University imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kancheepuram. Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management, and Technology Shape the academic tenor of the University. A number of institutions affiliated to Madras University concentrate on research activities offering Ph.D., Programs in their respective field of specialization.

The University also offers teaching and research programs at its four campuses. The 68 University Departments of study and research are spread over four campuses organized into 18 Schools each of which offers Post Graduate Courses in respective specialization, part time and full-time Ph.D. Programs, Diploma and Certificate Programmes.

Recognizing the need for educating a large number of people in the country, the University offers both Under Graduate and Post Graduate programs through the Institute of Distance Education (IDE).

Academics

The Madras University offers various undergraduate courses to students from all over the world. The undergraduate courses comprise of Tamil, English, Telegu, Urdu, Historical Studies, Public Administration and Economics, Vaishnavism, Christian Studies, Criminology, Tamil Literature and Mathematics, Geography, Psychology, Medical Sociology, Hotel Management, Fashion and Textile, Bachelor of Multimedia, Yoga, Music and much more. The eligibility for all these courses is open to all candidates who have passed any of the following examinations that have been previously conducted by the University, or any other equivalent University. There should a minimum gap of two years after passing class 12 from any school and all supporting higher education documents should be ready with the application form.

The university also offers various PG courses for students, which include Master of Arts in history and archaeology, anthropology, applied linguistics and Sanskrit, Arabic, Bharatanatyam and communication, continuing education, corporate sociology, criminal justice, Indian music, philosophy, and the list is simply never-ending.

Naturally, admission into this acclaimed university is not a piece of cake as it conducts an entrance test annually to select students for around half of their courses.

Admission Procedure

The admission procedure is based on the marks of the qualifying examination as well as the marks of the examination carried out during admission. Students can choose from a variety of courses in the undergraduate as well as the postgraduate level. There are various certificate programs and diploma programs as well. The application form for admission can be downloaded from the website directly.

Candidates applying for Madras University’s Entrance Exam have to fill separate application forms at a cost of Rs. 300/-. The cost of the application can be paid through the online mode through demand draft favouring ‘The Registrar, University of Madras’ payable at Chennai. The printout of the application form has to be sent directly to the Head of the Department along with the proof of payment of the application cost and the following certificates/documents on or before 20th June 2017.

  • Statement of Marks.
  • Provisional Degree Certificate.
  • Supporting documents for any concessions claimed.

The admissions are granted to some courses on the basis of the scores of the qualifying exams and other courses through the scores obtained in the entrance exam.

Madras University Admit Card/Hall Ticket 2017

The candidates who have applied and submitted the application form within the stipulated time limit can download the Admit Card from the official website.

Steps to Download the Admit Card

  • Click on the link to download the Admit Card.
  • You will see two options to download the admit card.
  • You can use Option 1 by entering Program, Batch, and Mobile No.
  • You can use Option 2 by entering Application No. and Date of Birth.
  • After entering the information, click on the ‘Download Admit Card’ tab.
  • Your Admit Card will be displayed on the screen.
  • Download and take multiple printouts of the admit card for future reference.

The Institute of Distance Education (IDE), University of Madras

Students who are not able to join the campus for courses can also opt for distance education from any part of the country. The University of Madras developed this excellent Institute of Distance Education in the year 1981 to help learners achieve their educational, career and personal goals. It has already completed more than 25 years of service in the field of Distance Education. Now the IDE is offering 22 Undergraduate Courses, 14 Postgraduate Courses, 9 Postgraduate Science Courses, 5 Professional Courses, 16 Diploma Courses and 12 Certificate Courses.

Admissions are made throughout the year for all these 78 Programs in two streams namely: Academic Year Admissions and Calendar Year Admissions.

Admissions are also made through the authorized Spot Admission and Study Centres. The IDE has 30 Spot Admission Centres located in different parts of Tamil Nadu. It has 50 Study Centres located in other States of our Country and has 11 Overseas Study Centres. Presently, the Institute has about 1,60,000 students on roll.

Campus

This collegiate research university has six campuses in the city viz., Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal, and Chetpet. The Chepauk campus of the University houses the VC’s secretariat, central library, centenary auditorium and the historic Senate House. The oriental and Indian languages departments are located in the Marina Campus. The Guindy campus incorporates the natural sciences departments while the campus at Taramani houses the school of basic medical sciences. The sports union and the botanical garden are based in Chetpet and Maduravoyal campus respectively.
