Mechanical Engineering is one of the most fascinating branches in field of Engineering and Technology. This celebrated field of higher study has for an evergreen demand and scope in job placements as well as research work.
Some students choose Mechanical Engineering owing to its traditional popularity. Some choose it for the fact that mechanical engineering demands dedication, hard work and sincerity at all times, making it a complete development of education and personality. But indeed, the most attractive reason to join Mechanical Engineering, as I think, is that you actually like designing and developing mechanical systems like Robots, Automobile parts, infrastructural parts and much more. Mechanical Engineering has extensions to other popular branches like Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering etc. as well.
Speaking of this, let me start with a general misconception that Mechanical Engineering has to deal only with mechanics, particularly Newtonian. That’s not completely correct. Mechanical Engineering is not just about Newtonian mechanics. It also includes stuff like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, properties of materials and some electronics. It’s more or less a finer application of traditional and modern physics and mathematics in designing, manufacturing and applying innovative ideas or modifying already available models to finer versions.
There is wide variety of opportunities in Mechanical field, starting from basics of Engineering Drawings to represent images of objects formally, to designing highly complex Robots and industrial application of automated or non-automated mechanical systems to ease production of a certain product. Personally, I like computer applications, and am quite enthusiastic about Robotics. I, thus, followed Mechanical Engineering and want to orient my attention on building robots while studying Computer-Integrated-Manufacturing; that is a dual application of coding and mechanical ideas.
Apart from interest, Mechanical Engineering has a wide scope for jobs. Giant companies like Thermax, L&T, Godrej, TATA Group, Kirloskar, Mercedes, Ford recruit Mechanical Engineers with high annual packages and interesting work in designing and manufacturing Aerospace parts, Automobiles, Compressors, Valves, Pumps, Agricultural Products, Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and much more.
Looking back into the past, you can find many successful Mechanical Engineers who have left their impressions permanent in our daily life styles. The well-known personality, Leonardo da Vinci, had remarkable contribution to this field in the late 1400s and early 1500s. His designs of flying machines, hydraulic systems and architecture are remarkable pieces of true mechanical engineering ideas. The famous James Watt, inventor of the steam engine and the extraordinary Nicholas Tesla for his significant contributions. The name of George Stephenson, Father of Railways, is unforgettable. Kumar Bhattacharya from IIT Kharagpur has been renowned all over the globe for his great work.
Mechanical demands sincere dedication and hard work. You will need to study and practice a lot and let the concepts seep deep. There could just be another name among the famous Mechanical Engineers – you.
