NCERT Class 12th Chemistry

Preparing for JEE Main or CBSE examination? One of the biggest tools that would help you to fare well in these exams is “NCERT”. In fact, ‘biggest’ would be an understatement, it contributes to almost 100% of these examinations. Here’s what all, you need to know about NCERT class 12th chemistry and how you should utilize it in an effective manner.

First of all, let me describe various parts of Chemistry. These parts are – Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. Now, without further adieu let’s delve deeper into the NCERT class 12th chemistry books.

  1. Inorganic Chemistry: Generally, considered one of the most boring parts to deal with and most of the people try to deal with it in the end. However, this leads to drastically poor results and ‘rot’ learning is given as an excuse for this. But believe me, if you start studying Inorganic Chemistry early, not only will you do well in it but you will also find it interesting. Moving on to how to deal with it, I would say go through the chapter ‘Classification of Element‘ and Periodicity’ of class 11th textbook as this would be the foundation of the entire Inorganic Chemistry. Going forward, the main focus should be on ‘P-Block Chemistry’ as it constitutes more than 50% of the class 12th Inorganic portion. I would rate all other chapters(Transition Elements, Co-ordination Compounds and General Principle and Process of Isolation of Elements) at par with each other. However, it is advised to go through them carefully as certain tricky questions are framed from these parts. Furthermore, as far as exercises are concerned, one should go at-least attempt the “In-text questions”. These questions are one of the best measures of your understanding of the chapter.
Remember, NCERT class 12th chemistry is THE book to use for preparing inorganic chemistry for JEE!
  2. Organic Chemistry: This is considered one of the most logical parts of Chemistry. In stark contrast to Inorganic Chemistry, this is one of the interesting sections. Most of the chapters in NCERT are easy to understand and thus problems are not encountered with regards to Organic Chemistry. I would, however, like to add that you should pay special attention to the last three chapters of this book(Polymers, Biomolecules, Chemistry in Everyday Life) Try to go through previous year questions of CBSE so as to get well acquainted with question types.
  3. Physical Chemistry: I would say this is generally in between Inorganic and Organic Chemistry (in consideration of the difficulty and interest). The most irritating part of this section, however, is that all the chapters have no correlation with each other. One is advised to deal with each one of them independently. Most of the chapters you deal will consist mainly of solving questions. Your success will generally be aligned with the number of questions you practice. The only chapter which consists of mugging is “Surface Chemistry“. I generally classify this under Inorganic Chemistry since the ways you deal with this is very similar to the way in which you would approach Inorganic Chemistry. I would say specifically for this part, go through the chapter exercises along with the “In-text Exercises” as this would give you an extra edge over others.

So, I have tried to explain the entire class 12 NCERT in detail. However, if you are thorough with this portion, I would also recommend solving the NCERT exemplars. (This test your conceptual understanding to the fullest)

NCERT Chemistry Class 12 Books

Students need to go through NCERT Books thoroughly as they are more than enough to cover the entire CBSE syllabus. It’s crucial to understand all the concepts which are given in the NCERT books.

Many times, CBSE board exams include twisted questions in the exam papers. So, if you are simply mugging up NCERT books, then you will think that the paper was out of these books. Students also get confused when it comes to how to crack the CBSE board exams. When we say cracking the board exams, we mean that you need to score more than 90% score. So, what exactly should the students do? You will always face the dilemma of getting confused if NCERT books are good enough for scoring this high percentage in the board exams. CBSE board always recommends that you study NCERT books as most of the questions are from there only.

In NCERT books, there are questions at the end of chapters. They include one-liners, match-the-following, quizzes, descriptive or fill-in-the-blanks questions. If you want to score well in the board papers, it is important that you attempt a variety of questions.

To conclude, NCERT Chemistry Class 12 textbooks are a very important study material for IIT JEE Chemistry preparation. Each year, approximately 20 to 25 percent of questions that get asked in JEE Mains Chemistry section are taken directly from the NCERT Chemistry class 12 textbooks. It is important that the students spend considerable time with the theoretical as well as the practical explanation of every concept mentioned in this book.

The textbooks have the collection of chapters which are written by the best authors in the field of chemistry and they give a great insight into the working of basic principles of chemistry. They equip students with the necessary knowledge to appear not only for their class 12th board examinations but also for many other competitive examinations like JEE Mains, BITSAT, VITEEE, etc.
