The National Institute of Technology, Warangal – NIT Warangal – formerly known as Regional Engineering College is a premier engineering and research institution located in Warangal, India. It is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. Foundation stone for this institute was laid by then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru on October 10, 1959. The institute was renamed as the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in September 2002.

The Regional Engineering College, Warangal was the first to be established (in 1959) among the chain of 15 Regional Engineering Colleges in the country. The classes for the first batch of students in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering branches commenced on 12 September 1959. The Bachelor’s program in Chemical Engineering was initiated in 1964. The following year saw the start of Metallurgical Engineering program. In 1971, the college started the undergraduate program in Electronics and Communication Engineering. B. Tech. in Computer Science & Engineering was started in 1983 and M. Tech. in Computer Science & Engineering in 1987. In 2006, the institute started a Bachelors program in Biotechnology.

In 1994, the institute was selected by the Overseas Development Administration of the UK for exchange programs between the UK and India in the field of information technology. This program ran till 1999. In 2000, the institute started its MBA program. The mission of NIT Warangal is to impart total quality education to develop innovative, entrepreneurial and ethical future professionals who are fit for the globally competitive environment. It visions towards a Global Knowledge Hub, striving continuously in pursuit of excellence in Education, Research, Entrepreneurship and Technological services to the society.

In September 2002, the college was renamed as National Institute of Technology and was given a deemed university status. NITW was given the status of Institute of National Importance (INI) on 15 August 2007. The World Bank Assistance under TEQIP has been a timely help in overall development of the institute. In November 2012, NIT Warangal entered MOUs with 12 European Higher education institutes.


The 256 acres of land is divided by the NH 202 highway into staff quarters, CCE and the main campus. The main entrance of the campus depicts the traditional elegance of Kakatiya Thoranam. The main entrance of the campus is inscribed with the Sanskrit/Telugu words “कर्मदैव हि संसिद्धि”, meaning that the one who works shall succeed.

NIT Warangal is a self-contained residential campus located on a beautiful wooded land. The Institute is well known for its dedicated faculty, staff and the state-of-the-art infrastructure conducive to a healthy academic environment. The Institute is constantly striving to achieve higher levels of technical excellence. The college is especially known for its hi-tech infrastructure.

The institute has State Bank of Hyderabad situated beside the campus main gate. The bank has two ATMs – one located in the bank premises and the other near the Sports Stadium. Institute has one shopping center which caters to the needs of the students and residents. The campus has a post office located near Viswesvraya Hall. The NITW campus comes under a separate postal zone and it is a postal delivery office. The dispensary has an X-ray machine, an ECG, and a pathology laboratory.

Ltd. and Sky e it solutions have started their activities in this center. The Lakshya Foundation, an alumni-led organization also has its office set up here. Besides these, M/s Infosys Pvt. Ltd. funded a research project, which is carried out in this center by the faculty and students of NIT Warangal. It also houses Web and Software Development Cell (WSDC), a team of students which develop the institute website, semester registrations, online feedback, online attendance, online mess and hostel allotment (OMAHA) among many other things.
  • The institute has recently set up an Innovation Garage, a 24×7 student-run multidisciplinary workspace for innovation. This laboratory provides students, access to latest gadgets, tools, and technology devices. It is a joint initiative of the institute & Lakshya Foundation.
  • The International meets, conferences, and student activities are held in the Abdul Kalam Hall, New Seminar Hall, New Conference Hall and the Auditorium.
  • The Central Library is housed in an area of 4000 Sq. meters and has around 1,57,596 books, technical pamphlets, standards, video cassettes etc. The library receives 215 Journals (125-Indian, 90-Foreign) and 2000 online journals and also has a virtual library.

In order to get into NIT, one must take the JEE (MAIN) exam and secure at least 75% marks (65% for SC/ST) in Class 12th exam or be in the top 20 percentile in Class 12th exam conducted by the respective board. Admissions are on the basis of rank in JEE (Main).

The Bachelor of Technology admissions for Indian students was based on the JEE – Main (Joint Entrance Examination). The exam consists of three sections on Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. However, since the year 2013, admissions are done through the JEE Mains, and ranks are given after considering 60% of the marks scored in the test, and 40% in the class 12 Board examinations. The B.Tech admissions for foreign students are done through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) and ICCR schemes.

M.Tech students are admitted to the program through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science. MCA students are admitted through NIMCET. The admissions to the MBA program in the institute are based on the CAT/MAT result. The shortlisted candidates will have to undergo Group Discussion / Personal Interview for the final selection. For MSc, the students are admitted through NITWET.

NIT Warangal invites applications for Ph.D. degree admissions in almost all departments, twice every academic year in July and December.

  1. Technozion
    Technozion, a three-day annual Technical Festival organized aims to provide a platform for students across the globe to assemble, interact, share and gain knowledge in various fields of science and technology. Through this Symposium, we seek to provide a platform for budding engineers and scientists from all over the world to display their skills in a plethora of events designed to exercise their minds and to further a spirit of technology. From its inception in 2006, Technozion has grown in strength and in numbers and is now considered to be amongst the second biggest technical festivals in India. One of the hallmarks of Technozion has always been the presence of notable luminaries gracing the Institute portals, delivering inspiring lectures, video conferencing and conducting interactive workshops for the benefit of the student community.   2. SpringSpree
    SpringSpree was started in the year 1978 by the students of National Institute of Technology, Warangal.  It was an intercollegiate annual sports and cultural event held between January and March every year. Students came up with the idea of holding a small festival, which would lay down a platform for the students to showcase their skills in the areas of sports, athletics and cultural activities. Additionally, the festival was to unify a diverse student body by celebrating the culture of the regions to which they belonged along with the culture of India as a whole. It was the first college festival in southern India and was conducted every year until the end of the 90s. SpringSpree was not conducted for a few years in the early 2000s. Its revival was gradual with small fests from clubs finally giving rise to a mini cultural festival called Elysium in 2006. In 2007, SpringSpree was brought back and has since been an annual event. SpringSpree, a three-day annual cultural festival, showcases 55+ events in the fields of art, literature, drama, dance, music, quizzing, photography, and painting. Including spotlight events like Fashion Show, Bboying Competition, Rock Music Competition, Model United Nations, and Minute Made. A number of arts and skill oriented workshops are also held to give a jump start to the enthusiastic participants. Apart from these, SpringSpree holds various attractions like Amazing Race, Lounge, The One, The Haunted House and many others. To cater to the young entrepreneurs there are events involving business planning and stock marketing. SpringSpree also conducts concerts during the three days of Spree, known Pronites. Famous musicians are invited to close each day of the fest with a bang. In the years prior, National Institute of Technology, Warangal, has seen the likes of Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Jasraj, Naresh Iyer and Stephen Devassy to name a few. Indian rock bands like Parikrama, Thermal and a Quarter, ThemClones, Drum Cafe and others have also performed.
  3. Cura
    A prestigious National level Management fest conducted by School of management NIT Warangal.Provides a brilliant platform for the budding managers to amplify & display their phenomenon skills of management science. With efficiently pitched dimensions of various events spread across 2 days of Cura, participant’s gets to explore their own stand witnessing & interacting the Sudoku’s directly from industry.“It’s a Latin word signifying thoughtfulness. It aims at fostering creativity & innovativeness.”

The event called Zero Gravity is held every year which is an inter-branch competition in cultural events.

Mutyala Raju Revu, I AS-2006 Topper Mutyala Raju Revu, an Indian Police Service probationer hailing from Andhra Pradesh, has topped the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination 2006 in the country. He will be joining the Andhra Pradesh cadre of the Indian Administrative Service.
  2. Sokrati is a marketing and advertising company founded in the year 2009. Sokrati is one of India’s leading digital ad technology, paid search and big data analytics firm, with proprietary algorithms, artificial intelligence, and automation at its backbone.Santosh Gannavarapu completed Computer Science Engineering in the year 2000 from National Institute of Technology – Warangal. Post completing MS in Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University in the year 2003, Santosh worked with Amazon for almost four years before starting up with Sokrati.
  3. Srinidhi Varadarajan is the director of the Terascale Computing Facility and an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. He joined the Department of Computer Science in August 1999. His research interests are in the area of high-performance computer systems. In particular, fault tolerance in large-scale distributed systems, network emulation, network routing algorithms, compiler directed frameworks and parallel simulation algorithms. He currently heads the Computing Systems Research Laboratory and serves as a core faculty member in the Laboratory for Advanced Scientific Computing and Applications. He is also the architect of System X, one of the world’s fastest and least expensive supercomputers. In 2004, he was named to the MIT Technology Review TR100as one of the top 100 innovators in the world under the age of 35. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Electronics And Communication Engineering from NIT Warangal.
