In India, the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are the second-best engineering institutes after the IITs. The NITs are a group of premier public engineering colleges in India and receive special recognition and grant from the Government of India. An act of parliament has declared them as Institutes of National Importance. The NITs offer many courses for bachelors, masters, and doctorate levels in different branches of engineering and technology. In this article, we’re providing the latest NIT rankings & discussing the Top 10 NITs for your benefit.

Making an Informed Decision

Admission to the undergraduate course (B. Tech.) in NITs is through the highly-competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains. Every year, a large number of students appear for various entrance exams viz. JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, VITEEE, WBJEE, MHTCET, KCET, etc. to get admission in the premier engineering colleges in India. After their results, the students face the difficult task of selecting the best engineering college for their higher studies. With so many NITs spread across the country – some being more reputed than the newer IITs regarding placement, campus life, brand value, etc. – selecting one institute can be tricky.

We’ve put together an exhaustive list to help make the decision easier for all aspiring candidates.

NIT Rankings

The MHRD has approved the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) which was launched by the Honorable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015. This framework outlines an approach to rank institutions across the country. The methodology takes inputs from the overall recommendations and the broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD to set-up the basic parameters for ranking various universities and institutions in the country.

Before we get started, let me clarify that these rankings are based on criteria such as “teaching learning and resources”,” Research, and Professional Practices, “Graduation Outcomes”, “Outreach and Inclusivity”, and “Perception”. In 2017 also, the broad ranking parameters have remained the same with some emphasis on certain sub-parameters. This year every large institution was given a common overall rank as well as a discipline-specific rank as applicable. You can check the NIRF methodology for ranking of academic institutions.

We have also included highlights of the NITs under the rankings table to help you evaluate these colleges on various parameters.
