Pi Day activities are often a dedication that people make towards an entire day. This day is an annual (one in a year) celebration of the mathematical constant –  π. Further, Pi Day celebration happens on March 14th. Why March 14th? Because it is 3/14 in the month/day format since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. In the year 2009, the United States House of Representatives support the designation of Pi Day. However, Pi Approximation Day celebrations happen on July 22. Because 22/7 in the day/month format, since the fraction ​227 is a common approximation of π.

Observances and Celebration of the Pi Day

Pi Day has been observed in many ways. Which also inclusive of eating pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number π, due to a pun based on the words “pi” and “pie” being homophones in English, and the coincidental circular nature of a pie. Also, some schools hold competitions as to which student can recall pi to the highest number of decimal places.

Moreover, it is a semi-formal and casual celebration of the π which seems to trouble all students. Events and fun activities are often conducted with the aim of paying tribute to Pi and to show how one can have fun being associated with it.

Pi Day activities may seem like a rather cumbersome and hectic bunch of mathematical activities. However, that is not true. Who says that when math is involve, it has to be complicate? Well, the Pi Day activities are very fun and student-centered. Listed below are some of the popular and not to forget, Fun Pi Day activities that a teacher can conduct.

Assemble a Pi Day Paper Chain

Just like our old mathematical friend pi, paper chains can be endless in activity time, length, and fun! As a class or grade, create the Pi Day chain with loops of construction paper, using a different color for each of the 10 digits. Each colored chain link represents a decimal place or a digit.

Name the Pi Numbers

Hold a small contest for naming the most numbers of the pi value, after decimal point. Also, make sure to reward the winner with a pie. This is successful fit of the pun pie for pi day. Moreover, it is a tradition that those who win the pi day activity, receives a reward in the form of a pie.

Start by Singing the Pi Song

Yes, that’s right! There is something called the ‘pi song’.

Work the Math

Provide plenty of circular objects like coffee/soup cans, pie tins, CDs, candles, etc. Further, make the kids measure the diameter and circumference. Then go on to divide the circumference by the diameter, and watch what happens EVERY SINGLE TIME.

A Pi word Challenge

Have a timer set for 1 minute. Let students name all the words that start with the two alphabets – p and i. For example: pick. The shorter time duration, the more fun it gets!
