What Do I Sign Up For While Pursuing Engineering?

Almost 14 lakh talented Indian kids register every year for JEE, the prime engineering entrance examination. However, the sad part is, most of them are just following the herd. They have no idea what this will entail in the future, not what they’ll do if they don’t like it. So here, we bring you some information about taking up engineering as career, before you take this up blindly. Read on!

What is Engineering?

Simply put, engineering is the application of science and math to solve problems. It is the application of scientific knowledge to solving problems in the real world. While science allows us to gain an understanding of the World and the Universe, it is engineering which enables this understanding to come to life through problem solving, designing and building things.

“A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering.” – Freeman Dyson

For long, engineering has been an integral part of the history of the human civilisation. From the Pyramids of Giza, to the Taj Mahal to the Eiffel Tower, engineering has played a crucial part in our heritage. Today’s Engineers not only build massive structures like the International Space Station, but also work on projects to map the human genome.

What would make you a good engineer?

To be a successful engineer it is important to ask why. When you are curious about something, your mind expects and anticipates new ideas related to it. When the ideas come they will soon be recognized. Without curiosity, the ideas may pass right in front of you and yet you miss them because your mind is not prepared to recognize them.

Creativity goes hand in hand with innovation. And there is no innovation without creativity. While creativity is the ability to produce new and unique ideas, innovation is the implementation of that creativity. Creativity is the driving force behind innovation and the incorporation of looking at things from a different perspective and freedom of restrictions by rules and written or unwritten norms.

Questioning the status quo

Though every business can benefit from repeatable practices, which ensure consistency, it is imperative for an engineer to question the status quo. People evolve over time, so do their needs. Hence, it is essential for you to question traditional methods.

What are the kind of skills you acquire?

Apart from gaining an in-depth knowledge of the subject in which you specialise, the course also provides you with a broad scientific and engineering background.

Graduates in engineering are constantly pushed to deliver better quality products, this provides them with:

  1. the skill to solve various kinds of problems irrespective of their magnitude and size
  2. a creative approach
  3. team-working skills
  4. the ability to analyse data
  5. excellent communication skills
  6. outstanding mathematical and computer skills

What are your future prospects?

Engineers have many career opportunities. A graduate might perform ground-breaking scientific research, work as a field engineer, or occupy a senior management position. Graduates employed by multinational companies often travel all over the world.

Even those graduates who choose not to accept jobs in the industry are highly employable in other areas because they are experienced at solving problems and have good analytical and management skills. Engineering graduates can go on to successful careers in finance, consultancy or scientific journalism, to name but a few.
