The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous public medical colleges of higher education. An act of parliament has declared these Institutes as ‘Institutions of National Importance.’ Established with the objective of developing patterns of teaching in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education, it also aims at demonstrating a high standard of medical education in India. In 2012, the Health Ministry added six new branches of All India Institute of Medical Sciences in different parts of India viz. Bhopal, Patna, Jodhpur, Rishikesh, Raipur and Bhubaneshwar. Another one in Nagpur will join the list soon. It was done to create a balanced doctor-patient ratio of 1:1000 by 2021, which at present is 1:2000. The government aims to increase the overall MBBS seats to 80,000 and PG seats to 45,000 from the current 22,194 by the year 2021. The idea is to reduce the shortage of doctors. AIIMS offers MBBS and BDS courses for aspiring medical students.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Objectives

An Act of Parliament in 1956 established the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as an autonomous institution of national importance and defined its objectives and functions. By virtue of this Act, the Institute awards its own medical degrees and other academic distinctions. The degrees awarded by the Institute under the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act are recognized medical qualifications for the purpose of the Indian Medical Council Act and notwithstanding anything contained therein, are deemed to be included in the first schedule of that Act, entitling the holders to the same privileges as those attached to the equivalent awards from the recognized Universities of India.

In the field of postgraduate education, the most important function of the Institute is to provide opportunities for training teachers for medical colleges in the country in an atmosphere of research and enquiry. Located in Bhopal, M.P, this is one of the seven AIIMS Apex Healthcare Institutes that were established by the Government of India, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) and stood 2nd in ranking of AIIMS colleges. This initiative was taken to correct the regional imbalance in quality tertiary level healthcare in the country. The institute offers MBBS (100 students/year) and B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing (60 students/year). The admissions for both the courses are through a common entrance test conducted for seven AIIMS.

For most students, AIIMS Bhopal is one of the first choices after AIIMS Delhi. Being located inside the city gives it an edge as compared to the other AIIMS. Academically it’s one of the best colleges with a number of international medical conferences like TELEMEDICON-15, ASTICON-1. The college has participated in various international research projects with the students going to WSO, in Netherlands and others sought-after events. The Institute has hosted one of the biggest fests in central India i.e. RETINA -16 that got participants from various parts of India.

The institute provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls. The hostels are equipped with all the modern amenities such as well-furnished, spacious and air-conditioned rooms. Located in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, and built on about 100 acres of land, it was established in 2012 and scored 3rd rank in ranking of AIIMS colleges. The institute offers MBBS and B Sc (Hons.) Nursing to aspiring medical students. Initially known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose All India Institute of Medical Sciences, it has a total of 39 medical departments and a faculty strength of 140.

The satellite campus is soon to be launched in Balasore with an area of 25 acres land, which is adjacent to the national highways road. The estimated cost for setting up this centre costs around Rs.300 Crores. This centre will add importance to the AIIMS Bhubaneswar.. It has also planned to launch health awareness programs to prevent non-communicable diseases such as cancer, heart diseases, mental problems, diabetes and high blood pressure. The main aim of this program is to reduce the infant and maternal mortality rates.

Now, students from AIIMS Bhubaneswar are offered a golden opportunity for continuing their higher education in any of the premier institutes of America. For this, the institute has tied up with the Educational commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in Philadelphia to ease the process of higher education in foreign countries.

The institute is situated in the heart of the city of Basni, Jodhpur. Its foundation stone was laid in 2004, and the college started its academic session in Sept 2012. AIIMS, Jodhpur, was the first in the newly-established six AIIMS to begin the OPD services in 15 areas of specialization. The college offers MBBS and B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing programs for students. and stood 4th in ranking of AIIMS colleges.

AIIMS, Jodhpur ensures that it provides excellent facilities to the students. It houses a separate hostel for undergraduate girls and boys and also offers residential services to nurses and nursing students. There are many guest houses available in the college campus and the institution organizes workshops for students from time to time as well. The institution has well-equipped laboratories for several departments, canteen and mess facility, lecture halls with modern learning aids, cafeteria, exclusive library.

  1. AIIMS, Patna (website)

AIIMS, Patna (stood 5th ranking of AIIMS colleges), is spread over 134 acres, comprising the main medical college on an area of 100 acres and residential campus on 34 acres. Established in 2012, today it caters to a footfall of 1000-1500 patients a day, does more than 200 investigations at 27% lower cost than The Central Government Health Scheme rates and has conducted more than 800 major surgeries since March’2014, among its various other feats. It offers MBBS & B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing programmes to medical students.

AIIMS Patna doubled the intake of its students into its MBBS course to 100 in 2013 from 50 in 2012. Currently, the institute has 56 faculty members. The representatives of AIIMS Patna and UNICEF visited Muzaffarpur on June 13, 2013, and took blood samples of AES-affected children for the test. AIIMS-Patna has collaborated with the National Knowledge Network (NKN), which helps it in availing facilities like virtual classes and e-library besides collaboration in research and telemedicine facilities with other centres for higher learning across the country.

The institute is based in Chattisgarh, Raipur and spread over an area of 103 acres. Its aim is to establish a centre of excellence in medical education, training, health care and research instilled with scientific culture, compassion for the sick and commitment to serve the underprivileged. The college offers MBBS and B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing courses and has admitted 100 MBBS students per year since 2013. The hospital has a total of 43 departments and a bed capacity of 160.

AIIMS MBBS Merit List Tie-Breaking Method

If the rank of two or more candidates is equal, the conducting body, AIIMS, New Delhi will follow the tie-breaking methodology as mentioned below.

  • Biology: Candidates with higher percentile scores in Biology will be given a higher rank.
  • Chemistry: If the tie still exists, the higher percentile scores in Chemistry will be ranked higher.
  • Physics: If the tie still remains, candidates securing higher percentile scores in Physics will be granted higher rank.
  • Age: At last, the elder candidate will be allotted higher rank.

Microbiology

The role of Microbiology is to provide clinical consultation on investigation, diagnosis & treatment of patients suffering from infectious diseases and for implementing infection control programmes and developing a feasible Antibiotic policy. Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to these agents.

Forensic Medicine and Toxicology

The Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology is situated on the 3rd floor of the Academic Block of the Institute. It is engaged in teaching medical students by providing hands-on experience and modern teaching modalities.

The Department of Pathology at AIIMS Rishikesh is located at the A4 and A5 blocks in the second floor of the Medical College building.
