Engineering has become one of the most sought after career avenues in present day India. And thus, engineering colleges, led by the various IITs and NITs have emerged as top destinations for undergraduate studies in the country. In this article, we take a look at the top 10 engineering exams which students need to take in order to get into the engineering colleges of India.

1. JEE Main – This is the first stage of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) which serves as the entrance test to the prestigious IITs and NITs. Previously, this exam was known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Those who manage to bag a rank within the top 1.5 lakh candidates taking the exam go through to the next stage – JEE Advanced. The other rank holders get a chance to get into the NITs.

2. JEE Advanced – Presently open to only the top 1.5 lakh candidates screened through the JEE Main Examination, this is the toughest nut to crack for aspiring engineers. The only gateway to undergraduate studies in the Indian Institutes of Technology – JEE Advanced gives aspirants the chance to fight for the 10,000 odd seats in the IITS. However, besides the scores of this test, the final admission to the IITs is also contingent upon the candidate’s performance in his board exams.

3. BITSAT – You have to take BITSAT if you aspire to see yourself in one of the campuses of Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS). The 4 campuses of BITS are located at Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. BITS Pilani is one of the top ranked institutions in the country, and is ranked right next to the top IITs in the sphere of engineering. This is a computer-based test, and only those aspirants with a minimum of 75% marks in PCM in their 12th Board exams are eligible for it.

4. DTU Entrance Examination – If you have 60% or more marks in PCM in Class 12 Board exams, then you are eligible to take the entrance exam for admission to the Delhi Technological University. Previously known as the Delhi College of Engineering, DTU is one of the finest engineering colleges in the country. The University of Delhi is the nodal authority for conducting the exam.

5. VITEE – The Vellore Institute of Technology Entrance Examination is one of the toughest in our list of Top 10 Engineering Exams. VITEE is the gateway to VIT, which is counted among the best private engineering colleges of this country. Besides the scores of this test, the marks obtained by aspirants in their 12th Board exams are also taken into consideration for admission to VIT.

6. WBJEE – The state of West Bengal has a number of reputed engineering colleges, and students interested in getting into any of them have to take the WBJEE. The entrance test for the various engineering colleges in West Bengal, WBJEE is a popular pick among the top 10 engineering exam of the country, taken by more than 2 lakh candidates every year. WBJEE is considered to be more of a test of speed of problem solving than intellectual depth.

7. MHCET – This is a prestigious entrance examination for admission to the various engineering colleges in the state of Maharashtra. The examination is held in two phases, at two different times of the year. A minimum of 50% marks in the 12th Board exam serves as the eligibility criteria for this test.

8. KIITEE – Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Odisha is one of the most well known engineering colleges in the eastern part of the country. KIITEE is the entrance test for admission to this college. This is an online test, which is generally conducted in April on May every year.

9. KCET – The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) is conducted to admit students into the various reputed engineering colleges in Karnataka. A bare minimum of 45% marks in PCM in 12th Board exams is sufficient to make you eligible to take this test.

10. EAMCET – For admission into the various colleges of Andhra Pradesh, one needs to take the Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET). The scores of this test are accepted in not only engineering colleges, but also medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh.
