Under the Ministry of defence, Sainik Schools Society manages the Sainik Schools system of school. This System of Sainik schools was started in 1961 by V.K Krishna Menon, the then Defence Minister of India. The motivation to start Sainik Schools came from the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC). This initiative was taken up to counter the imbalance in the regional and class among the Office cadre of the Indian Military. This also prepares the students for entry into National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy. As of now, there are 26 such schools all over India. Sainik Schools are the common man’s public school. Here the deserving students get high-quality education irrespective of their class or income background. Sainik Schools have seats reserved for children of serving defence personnel and concession is provided to government officials. The aim is to prepare the students to lead as officers in the Defence services of India. The curriculum allows the cadets to develop their skills in sports, academics and other extracurricular activities.  Sainik Schools infrastructure includes running tracks, cricket football and hockey fields, parade ground, boxing ring, horse riding clubs. The cadets are classified depending upon their class of study and are assigned to different houses. The cadets compete in various competitions to win the trophy for their house. The UP Sainik School is the first Sainik School in India and the only one to be administered by the state government. The education is subsidised by the UP Government. It is a boy’s school which is affiliated to CBSE. It is run by UP Sainik School Society with the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh as Chairman. It is completely financed by the State Government. Sainik Schools Society is registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act (1860). The school is in Sarojini Nagar, on the Lucknow-Kanpur road. It is a spread over 250 acres. The distance from Railway station and Airport is 12km and 03km respectively.  The School was later renamed to Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey UP Sainik School after its alumni Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey who posthumously received Param Veer Chakra.

Admission in UP Sainik School

Admission is done on based on competitive exam and personal interview. It is then followed by a Medical exam conducted by the military Medical Board at the Command Hospital in Lucknow.

Students having UP domicile certificate aged between 10 and 12 years as on July 2, of the year of admission are eligible to apply. The student must have passed class 6 from a recognized school. The admission is done based on the final placement in the merit list and the number of available seats in the school.

The academic year of the school has been divided into:

  • First Term 1 July to 24 December.
  • Second Term 15 January to 30 April.
  • Summer Vacation from about 3 May to about 30 June.
  • Winter Vacation from about 24 December to about 15 January.

The objective of the school is to prepare the cadets physically, mentally and academically to get commissioned in various ranks of the Defence services through the National Defence Academy. To achieve the goal, school provides education including:

(a) Prepare the students to an educational standard which will help them to compete successfully in the open competition for admission to the National Defence Academy.

(b) Empower the cadets by training, which will instil in them the quality of self-reliance and confidence which will help them to derive the complete benefit from the courses of instruction at the National Defence Academy.

(c) To prepare cadets to be physically fit to earn their place at the N.D.A.  To later face the challenges and hardship with courage and endurance from life in the Armed Forces.


Currently, Colonel Amit Chatterjee is the Principal of the UP Sainik School. He was appointed as the principal on 25 October 2016. He is a post graduate in Mathematics, has completed his B.Ed and M.Phil apart from a Post Graduate Diploma in Administration. He was commissioned into 16th Light Cavalry in the year 1995. He has worked as Joint Director Recruitment Directorate, Army Headquarter in New Delhi. He has also served in Corps Headquarter and completes many other Military courses. He was the Principal of Sainik School in Nalanda Bihar. He has been awarded for his exemplary stint as the Principal of the then Governor of Bihar, honourable Ram Nath Kovind.

Lt Colonel Vijay Rana is the Headmaster of UP Sainik School. He joined the school on 9 February 2016. He has passed his M.Sc in physics, then went on to complete his M.Ed and M.A in psychology with distinction. He has also completed Post Graduate Diploma in School Leadership and Management. His initial couple of years were with 2 Gharwal Rifles in operation Rakshak and Operation Parakram.

Infrastructure and Facilities

  1. Squash Court: It was built with the help of UP Jal Nigam. It has a seating capacity of 50 and fitted with fibreglass partition.
  2. Amphitheatre: It has a seating capacity of 1500 people. It has a large stage for organising various competitions and cultural activities.
  3. War Memorial: It is a large white structure and is a worthy tribute to the Martyrs who were alumni of the school.
  4. Daniel Academic Block: It is a new block build to cater to the growing need for education through modern technology. It is named after the first Principal of the school.
  5. Smart Classrooms: It has 9 computer-aided smart classes. It is equipped with video projection system, Interactive board, speakers etc.
  6. Major Salman Khan, Shaurya Chakra Sports Stadium: It was inaugurated on 7 March 2013. It is a newly constructed state of the art stadium and is named after the alumnus Late Major Salman Khan.
  7. Meditation Hall: It was inaugurated on 8 March 2013. It has a capacity of 100 people.
  8. Staff Quarters: 16 new quarters have been built with modern amenities
  9. Captain Manoj Pandey, PVC Auditorium: It is a centrally air-conditioned auditorium with seating capacity of 1000. It was inaugurated on 4 May 2011.
  10. Study Room in Senior Hostel: It has a capacity of 50 students


Uttar Pradesh Sainik School is the first Sainik School started in July 1960. This acted as the stepping stone for new Sainik Schools to be opened in India. There are currently 26 Sainik Schools in India. UP Sainik school is the only one to be administered and financed by the Uttar Pradesh State Government. It is affiliated to CBSE board. This article talks briefly about the admission process, academic calendar, Infrastructure and facilities provided by the school.
