Today, this South Indian state is popular amongst students who are seeking higher education, especially professional education, and a University that lives up to expectations is VIT University Chennai.
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is one of the front-runners among private engineering colleges in the recent decade. VIT University was established with the aim of providing quality higher education on par with international standards. The campus has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with students from all corners of the globe. VIT University Chennai, formerly known as Vellore Engineering College, is a private university in Tamil Nadu, India was founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College, by G. Viswanathan. The institution offers 20 undergraduates, 34 postgraduate, four integrated and four research programs. It has campuses in Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. This article focuses on the VIT University Chennai Campus.
VIT University Chennai was established in the year 2010. The VIT University Chennai was established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, and was founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution called the Vellore Engineering College. The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred University status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001.
Campus at VIT University Chennai
VIT University Chennai campus is spread across a vast area of 177 acres. A striking feature of VIT is the well- planned and comprehensive infrastructure provided for both students and faculty. Fully furnished and well-equipped labs decorate every building in the University with over 83 servers to manage all the data transmissions.
There are two academic blocks in VIT University Chennai which are extremely specialised in their own particular field, namely- AB1 and AB2. ‘Auditorium’, able to accommodate 400 students and, it has been built with centralised air conditioners, Wi-fi service and a spectacular stage along with the perfect amount of lighting. This auditorium is used for various events and conferences.
VIT University Chennai has a number of centers for physical education and sports activities that help the students maintain physical fitness and develop a competitive spirit. Its numerous outdoor playgrounds and indoor courts are spread over a vast area. The classrooms are well-designed rooms that incorporate everything needed for a pleasant learning atmosphere. The wide spacious classrooms contain a whiteboard and also a projector that is used for teaching so a professor can switch to different modes of teaching as and when required so the teaching isn’t monotonous and the lectures are put across in the best way possible.
VIT University Chennai admits students on the basis of merit through an online entrance exam. VIT organizes its own entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). It is conducted every year in the month of April and May. In 2015, over two lakh students or two hundred thousand students appeared for the entrance examination. The exam has been conducted online since 2013. The VITEEE has consistently been easier than other engineering entrance exams like JEE Main (formerly AIEEE) and JEE Advanced (formerly IIT-JEE).
VIT University had conducted VITEEE 2017 online from April 5 to April 16, 2017, while the application form of VITEEE 2017 was available from November 9, 2016 onwards. VIT University has also announced the test centre-wise dates for VITEEE 2017. VIT University doesn’t declare any cutoff marks for admission to B.Tech/B.E. programmes available at the 4 campuses of Chennai, Vellore, Andhra Pradesh and Bhopal. VITEEE cutoff 2017 can be considered as the closing rank for different branches for which VITEEE 2017 counselling will be held in different phases.
For the academic year 2016-17, the candidates in the top merit slab of 1 to 20,000 were called for counselling on different days in the first phase of counselling. Candidates are offered admission to different branches at the two campuses based on their percentile merit. For the academic year 2015-16, a total of 1,84,483 had taken the entrance exam, while seats were allotted to only those candidates who were ranked 99,999 or above.

- PIO and OCI holder are also eligible to apply for VITEEE-2019. (Foreign Candidates studied/studying in abroad can apply directly through foreign category only).

- Qualifying Examination:
Candidates appearing for the VITEEE-2019 should have either completed or shall be appearing in 2017, in any one of the following qualifying examinations:
- The final examination of the 10+2 system of Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the State Board; Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE, New Delhi) The Council for Indian School Certificate Examination -ISCE, New Delhi.
- Intermediate or Two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
- High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.
- General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Srilanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
- As per VIT Norms, NIOS candidates are eligible to appear for the VITEEE-2017.
Eligibility Criteria for the Qualifying Examination:> Candidates appearing for the VITEEE in 2019 should have secured an aggregate of 60% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology in the qualifying examination (+2/Intermediate).
> The average marks obtained in the subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology (PCM / PCB) in +2 (or its equivalent) put together should be 50% for the following categories:
- Candidates belonging to SC/ST
- Candidates hailing from Jammu and Kashmir and the North Eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
CERTIFICATE TO PROVE NATIVITY should be produced at the time of counselling, failing which they will not be considered for admission.
- Candidates who have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are eligible for all the B.Tech. Programmes.
- Candidates who have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are eligible for B.Tech. Bio-Medical Engineering and Biotechnology programmes. They are also eligible for B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering (Spec. in Bioinformatics) but after joining, registering Mathematics as bridge course is mandatory.Age Limit: Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after 1st July 1995 are eligible to apply for VITEEE-2019. The date of birth as recorded in the High School / SSC / X Certificate will be considered authentic. Candidates should produce this certificate in original as a proof of their age at the time of counselling, failing for which they will be disqualified.

The campus is a self-sufficient enclave with black-topped, well-lit roads. The University buses to transport all students from, and to, all the locations in and around Vellore. This helps the day scholars and local residents reach college on time with comfort. With a luxurious and large campus, travelling from one building to another during urgent hours might be tough – to solve this issue, Shuttle Cabs run all around the college during all the active hours of the day. Shuttle cabs not only take students from any point to any point, but they do so at meagre prices.
Fests and co-curricular activities are something students can look forward to before taking admission in this college. After all, no one wants to be only a bookworm. VIT conducts a lot of fests all throughout the year, which includes the most famous Riviera, the cultural festival in February.
