Cricket is very nearly a religion in India. There would be very few people in the country who haven’t yet watched a cricket match. Having seen them don the uniform and play the sport as second nature, it is intriguing to ponder on what these cricketers have by way of academic qualification. Rather unintuitively some of them hold degrees in Engineering, some in Medicine, others in Commerce, even Astrophysics and Business Administration. 10 Well Educated Cricketers of India
Born in 1970 at Bengaluru, Anil Kumble seemingly performed magic with his right arm leg break bowling style, taking the Indian team to victory on many occasions. He was also the Test Captain for team India for a time. Kumble completed his pre-university college education from National College Basavanagudi. His cricketing career lasted from 1989 to 2010. Kumble graduated with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering (RVCE). Along with being one of the most well educated cricketers around, he is also a recipient of the Padma Shri award and one of the Indian cricketers who feature in the ICC Hall of Fame.
Javagal Srinath is a former member of the Indian cricket team and is currently an ICC Match Referee. He is considered one among India’s finest fast bowlers and remains the only Indian fast bowler to have taken more than 300 wickets in ODIs. Srinath made his test debut in the year 1991 against Australia and his last one day international match was also against Australia in the year 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Instrumentation Technology from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysuru. He is a recipient of the Arjuna Award in 1999.
Rahul Dravid or “The Wall” is a legendary batsman and wicket keeper. He has led Team India in both Tests and ODIs and is known for his nature to keep calm and collected demeanor. He made his test debut in the year 1996 and his last test match was played in the year 2012. He did his schooling at St. Joseph’s Boy’s High School, Bangalore. He holds a Graduate Degree in Commerce from St. Joseph’s College of Commerce in Bangalore. He was selected in the Indian National Cricket Team while pursuing his MBA in St Joseph’s College of Business Administration, making him one of the most well educated cricketers of India!
The son of Physicians Dr. Shantaram and Dr. Satyabhama, V V S Laxman was India’s ‘go to’ test batsman because of his consistent form and batting style. He was one of the Great Indian Batting Quartet along with Tendulkar, Dravid and Ganguly who took Indian batting to new heights during their era in the game. His schooling was from Little Flower High School, Hyderabad. After completing of his higher secondary education, V.V.S. Laxman started pursuing MBBS. However, he realized that his passion laid elsewhere and ultimately chose cricket instead of a career in medicine. Laxman is also a recipient of the Padma Shri Award. He now holds an honorary doctorate degree from Teri University, New Delhi.
Ashwin has made a name for himself as a reliable bowler in ODIs and T20s, and as a formidable all-rounder in Tests. He hails from Tamil Nadu and came into the spotlight playing in the Indian Premier League. He holds a Bachelor in Technology degree in Information Technology from the reputed SSN College of Engineering in Chennai. He had his schooling from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) and St. Bede’s, both of which have a reputation for providing quality education. After his graduation he worked in Cognizant Technology Solutions before turning fully to cricket.
Srikkanth was a prolific batsman who played for team India in the yesteryears. He held the captain’s position for the team and is still regarded as one of the best styles to watch playing the game. He is still involved actively in the Indian cricketing scene, having a position in the selection committee. He graduated from the prestigious College of Engineering, Guindy or as it is more commonly referred to as Anna University in Chennai. His degree is in Electrical Engineering.
Another mainstay for the past few years, Raina made his ODI debut in 2005 against Sri Lanka. He made a name for himself as a consistent and highly reliable batsman in all forms of the game. Raina especially captured the hearts of the people with his record consistent performance in the IPLs. Like his team mate, Raina also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from Delhi University. He was also awarded the Border-Gavaskar scholarship to train at the Australian Cricket Academy.
Murali Vijay came to the attention of the Indian people when he was the opening batsman for the Chennai Superkings IPL team. Since then he has graduated to playing for Team India on several occasions and in all formats of the game. He has a Post Graduate Degree in Economics. He holds the degree from the renowned SRM university.
Salvi, hailing from Mumbai, was a right arm pacer for Team India. Relatively unknown during his initial career, he rose very quickly from being a backup pacer for his Ranji trophy team to a playing for Team India. His bowling style has been compared to that of the Aussie egend Glenn McGrath. Perhaps most notably however is his education. probably the most educated of the current crop, he holds a Post Doctorate Degree in Astrophysics.
Rahane has been a mainstay in the Indian cricket team since a few years ago. Proving his worth on the field and having played few spectacular innings, he has become a household name in India. He finished his secondary education in SV Joshi High School, Dombivli and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce.
Khurasiya, a left hand batsman, has the rare distinction of clearing the formidable and highly regarded Indian Administrative Services exam (IAS) before being drafted to play for India.
Probably the most prolific captain for team India, Dhoni captured the hearts and minds of the people with is calm stature and an uncanny ability to captain the team under pressure. He holds a BCom Degree.
