To promote education in the poorer sections of the state, The West Bengal Government has taken an initiative. They have introduced the West Bengal Scholarship Scheme. It is like the West Bengal Pre- Matric Scholarship or West Bengal Post- Matric Scholarship and West Bengal Merit cum Means Scholarship. The West Bengal scholarship Scheme is also known as the Swami Vivekananda West Bengal Government Merit Cum Means Scholarship Scheme.  This particular education scholarship scheme aims at providing financial assistance to the poor and meritorious students of West Bengal to be able to pursue their higher studies. These scholarships are given for a year with a condition of renewal based on satisfactory academic performance.

This West Bengal scholarship Scheme is introduced for the candidates of post-Madhyamik levels in regular courses who are domiciled in the state of West Bengal and studying in one of the Government recognized educational institutions of this State. These candidates would have passed out from the State Board/ Council of Secondary/ Higher Secondary Education.

Another important criterion is that the upper ceiling for family income has been fixed at Rs.2,50,000/- per annum. Any candidate who fulfills these criteria’s may apply for the West Bengal Government Merit-cum-Means scholarship. There are various categorizations that have been made in the West Bengal Government Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Scheme. Candidates eligible under either of the criteria are eligible to apply for any of the schemes on the basis of their educational qualification.

The requirement for the West Bengal Scholarship

The West Bengal Minorities Development & Finance Corporation is a governmental organization that has taken the initiative to offers the scholarship to deserving candidates who belong to the minority group such as SC/ ST/ OBC category or the students those belong to financially backward families. The headquarters of this organization is located in Kolkata and it was formed in the year 1996. The candidates who fill their applications forms for the following West Bengal Scholarship Schemes will get scholarship according to the details as mentioned:

  1. For Scholarships at Higher Secondary level
    Scholarship  – Rs.1000/- p.m.
    The candidate should have secured a minimum of 75% in aggregate in Class 10th. Those students who have passed the Madhyamik Pariksha and are enrolled in Class-XI in the current academic year are eligible to apply
  2. For the Under Graduate level scholarships
    Scholarship – Rs.1000/- to Rs.5000/- p.m
    The candidates must have obtained at least 75% marks. Those students who are enrolled in the first year of Under Graduate Course after passing the H.S.Exam or its equivalent in the current academic year are eligible to apply.
  3. For scholarships at Diploma (Polytechnic) level
    Scholarship – Rs.1500/- p.m
    Candidates must obtain at least 75% marks in aggregate. Those students who are enrolled for first year Diploma (Polytechnic) courses [H.S. Examination or its Equivalent for Diploma in Pharmacy or Modern Office Practice & Management of 2 year duration ] and after passing-out in West Bengal State Council of Vocational Education & Training courses which is equivalent to H.S. Examination for 2nd year Diploma (Polytechnic) courses on lateral entry basis will be eligible to apply.
  4. For the Post-Graduate level scholarships
    Scholarship – Rs.2000/- to Rs.5000/- p.m.
    The candidate should have scored at least 55% marks in Honours subjects at the Graduation level. Students who are enrolled in the first year class of Post Graduate Course in general education after passing the Graduation with Honours in the current academic year are eligible to apply.

The notification announcing the West Bengal Government Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Scheme comes out in the month of September each year.
Usually, the last date of submission of application is by November/ December.
