What is Metacognition?

Teaching Metacognition in the Classroom

Teaching students metacognitive abilities in the classroom has various benefits. It makes them better and more independent learners. They understand the study material better and are also able to apply it to practical situations with more ease. This not only helps them with their learning ability but ultimately will also boost their academic performance and test scores.

Teachers can employ a number of tasks ans activities to boost the metacognitive abilities of the students. Let us take a look of few such steps a teacher can take.

  • To begin with, the teacher can explain how intricately human brain functions. How it processes information, stores knowledge and recalls it. You can also point out the negative impact of stress and overworking on the brain.
  • Schedule some separate time so students can actually reflect on the learning process. This will help them grasp the importance of metacognition.
  • Encourage the students to analyze their difficulty in learning. So what was difficult for them to learn and remember? What was relatively easier? This will help them understand which study method suits them better for which subjects.
  • Another important point is that students should understand how they reached an answer. What thought process did they take to arrive at their answer? Whether the answer is right or wrong is irrespective. What is important is they analyze how they reached the answer.
  • Another activity that encourages and develops metacognition is reflective thinking. So teachers must encourage a higher level of thinking that helps students understand their own belfies and biases. This will develop their learning skills as well.
  • Group activities and projects are also useful. They enable students to see and learn from other students’ perspectives and learning processes. It teaches them to respect outside perspectives.

While it is important to focus on actually teaching the lessons and the syllabus, teachers must some find some time to focus on self-learning and metacognition. Ultimately, a student that is able to understand how he learns will retain and process information better as well. This will have a positive impact on their academic careers. And ultimately will have long term benefits of making them better learners throughout their lives.
