The Fossil Fuel Mystery

Natural resources are useful materials that are found in nature

In other words, they are not made by any actions of humankind. Rather they exist in nature itself

But they are quite valuable to humankind

One of the important natural resources around us are fossil fuels

The three major fossil fuels around us are i) Coal ii) Petroleum iii) Natural gas

Fossil fuels are only found in nature and can not be made by man

In other words, their formation is exclusive to nature

They were formed by natural processes over millions of years

This is why, fossil fuels are aptly called Natural resources

As we can see, fossil fuel is made from two words - fossil and fuel

They are called fuels because they give out energy when burned

And modern humans have harnessed this energy to serve our needs

For eg: Coal is a fuel that is used in power plants to produce electricity

Similarly petrol, diesel etc. are fuels which power our automobiles

And these fuels are called “fossil” fuels because they originate from fossils

These fuels were formed around 300 million years ago

Back then, single celled organisms dominated earth

And the land was filled with swamps along with dense forests

When these organisms and plants died, they were subjected to geological processes occurring over millions of years

And finally, they were converted to fossil fuels

And as they are made from the dead remains of living organisms, they are called fossil fuels

Today, we can distinguish different fossil fuels on the basis of their state

First, we have the solid coal. They are mostly used to produce electricity

Next, we have the oily liquid called petroleum which powers almost all automobiles

Finally, we have Natural Gas which is quite popular as a cooking fuel

Revision

Fossil fuels are actually treasures buried deep inside earth’s crust

These are called fuels because they give out energy when burned

And as they are formed from the dead remains of living organisms, they are called fossil fuels

Coal, Petroleum and Natural gas are the most common fossil fuels used in the world

As they are exclusively formed in nature, they are called Natural resources

That’s all!
