Water Pollution and Harmful Effects

All organisms depend on water throughout their life, from birth to death

Water dominates the surface of Earth and is vital to life on our planet

Water is one of the most amazing things about earth and is the essence of all life on earth

Without it, our planet would have been lifeless

Water plays a very important role in every aspect of our life

The fact that 70% of the human body is made of water shows the importance of water in life

We need water in our day-to-day activities

Water is essential for agriculture. No agriculture means no food

Also, none of the industries would be functional without water

So, water is an integral part without which life is unimaginable. Yet, we don’t value water enough

We keep wasting it, we keep dumping waste into it and we keep contaminating it in many ways

The contamination of water usually due to human activities is called as water pollution

Water gets polluted when chemicals or microorganisms are released into water bodies such as lakes, rivers, oceans

All the toxic substances may remain suspended in the water or get deposited in the water bodies

This ultimately degrades the quality of water

Depending on the waterbody that gets contaminated, water pollution can be of different types

Some important types of water pollution includes: groundwater, surface water pollution

Groundwater is basically water stored underground

Many people depend on groundwater. They use it for both drinking and domestic purposes

Groundwater gets polluted when pesticides and fertilizers leach from landfills and seep into the ground

Use of polluted groundwater can have serious effects on human health

Surface water is what fills our oceans, lakes, rivers, and all those other blue bits on the world map

Nearly half of our rivers and streams and more than one-third of our lakes are polluted and unfit for swimming, fishing, and drinking

This is due to municipal, industrial wastes as well as random junk that are directly disposed into the water bodies

Contaminants such as chemicals, nutrients, and heavy metals are carried from farms, factories, and cities by streams and rivers

These are ultimately dumped in the oceans

This pollution of ocean water is also termed as marine water pollution

Water pollution has serious effects on humans as well as the environment

Drinking or consuming polluted water in any way has many disastrous effects on our health

It causes typhoid, cholera, hepatitis and various other diseases

Water pollution can cause an entire ecosystem to collapse if left unchecked

Chemicals in a water body, encourage the growth of algae. These algae form a layer on top of the pond or lake

Bacteria feed on this algae and this decreases the amount of oxygen in the water body. The severely affects the aquatic life

Another harmful effect due to water pollution is its effect on food chain

Disruption in food chains happens when toxins (mercury) and pollutants in the water are consumed by aquatic animals (fish, shellfish etc)

Ultimately, these toxins are consumed by humans which adversely affects our health
