Plastics as a Material of Choice

Introduction to PlasticsTypes of PlasticsCarbon Compounds in daily life

Transcript

  • 0:4hello students in this lesson we shall
  • 0:7be studying why is plastic as a material
  • 0:9of choice why it should be our first
  • 0:12choice if you have something made up of
  • 0:14a metal and a plastic that one teaches
  • 0:17of using a plastic is moreover a metal
  • 0:19let's see why the first very reason is
  • 0:22the plastic is light it is cheap it is
  • 0:28strong and durable so many properties
  • 0:35now first of all because it is light and
  • 0:39it is strong at the same time so we can
  • 0:40use plastic to make bodies of aircrafts
  • 0:43satellites etc because their body should
  • 0:46be strong as well as light so that they
  • 0:49can fly so plastic should be the choice
  • 0:52then if you have something made up of a
  • 0:54metal and something made up of plastic
  • 0:56and both are serving the same purpose so
  • 0:59why not go for a plastic material
  • 1:0because it's cheap okay and durable too
  • 1:4so due to which plastic becomes a
  • 1:6material of choice for example making
  • 1:9sad bodies of satellite aircrafts etc
  • 1:14okay then you have the second because
  • 1:20plastic has so many properties and it
  • 1:22can be molded into any shape and size
  • 1:24you can make many things out of plastic
  • 1:27like the slippers right from your
  • 1:29slippers to everything around you can be
  • 1:31made up of plastic ok slippers then you
  • 1:34have decorating materials many of them
  • 1:36can be made up of plastic toys okay they
  • 1:43need this cookware many of our cooking
  • 1:46vessels vessels can be made up of
  • 1:48plastic ok they can be molded into any
  • 1:50shape and many shapes bottles we have
  • 1:54around us etc so these are the various
  • 1:56uses of plastic and why because it is
  • 1:58light cheap strong and durable let's see
  • 2:0the second reason why plastic has to be
  • 2:2a material of choice for us the second
  • 2:5reason is plastic is a poor conductor
  • 2:12both of heat and
  • 2:15light so plastic does not conduct heat
  • 2:19or electricity at normal room
  • 2:21temperature okay an abnormal condition
  • 2:22so it is a poor conductor due to which
  • 2:25it becomes very useful for us now the
  • 2:27wires around us are made up of metals
  • 2:30which can conduct electricity but if we
  • 2:33touch those wires accidentally we will
  • 2:35suffer a huge shock from a huge shock so
  • 2:38due to which for our safety these metal
  • 2:41wires have to be covered with insulators
  • 2:43and best insulator is plastic because it
  • 2:45does not conduct electricity blasting is
  • 2:48used to cover electrical wires it is
  • 2:55also used in screwdrivers you must have
  • 2:58seen the screwdrivers have two parts one
  • 3:0is the metallic part and the other part
  • 3:2is made up of plastic so that we can
  • 3:4hold the screwdriver the metal part of
  • 3:6we hole and we put it in some electrical
  • 3:8appliance the current will flow through
  • 3:10the metal and it will come to us so we
  • 3:12will get big shocks so due to which the
  • 3:14screwdrivers part which we can hold is
  • 3:17made up of plastic even when we talk
  • 3:19with the cooking vessels cooking vessels
  • 3:20usually get very hot when they are
  • 3:23heated because they are made up of
  • 3:25metals and metals easily conduct heat so
  • 3:27when you touch that cooking vessel ice
  • 3:29accidentally also you will get hurt and
  • 3:32burn the etcetera so to avoid that many
  • 3:34cooking vessels are attached with
  • 3:36handles which are made up of plastic so
  • 3:38that we can touch the plastic instead of
  • 3:40the cooking vessel because it does not
  • 3:42get heated all right so handles off
  • 3:47cooking vessels even because it does not
  • 3:53conduct electricity it can be used to
  • 3:55make the switchboards okay because we
  • 3:58touch the switchboard today so inside or
  • 4:0whatever the current is passing through
  • 4:2it will not come to us because of the
  • 4:3plastic all right and then there are
  • 4:7many materials like bakelite mal
  • 4:10melamine these materials that that's
  • 4:12nothing more apply a type of plastic
  • 4:14only they can be used to make cookware
  • 4:17which really we can use in microwave
  • 4:18oven because in microwave and a lot of
  • 4:21heat is generated that is for cooking
  • 4:23our things or heating up our food right
  • 4:26so
  • 4:26these plastics and we use it because
  • 4:28they do not conduct heat
  • 4:30okay so plastics can be used to make
  • 4:40cookware for microwave oven alright so
  • 4:53hope you'll agree with all these uses
  • 4:54and why again for this reason plastic
  • 4:58becomes a material of choice let's go to
  • 5:0the third reason now the third reason is
  • 5:3that plastic is nonreactive see there
  • 5:6are many metals which are used as
  • 5:8containers but many a times you cannot
  • 5:10store your food in these metal
  • 5:12containers because metals do react
  • 5:14slowly with the food and they will spoil
  • 5:16the food and there are many chemicals
  • 5:17too which are present in laboratories
  • 5:19they are extremely reactive okay the
  • 5:21chemicals are meant to be reactive so
  • 5:23due to which they cannot be stored in
  • 5:25such containers too so for that plastic
  • 5:28comes to our rescue because it is non
  • 5:30reactive so it helps in storing many
  • 5:35chemicals okay and it is it is also good
  • 5:44because it helps in storing many food
  • 5:48materials so that they do not get
  • 5:51spoiled even plastic has a very
  • 5:54important use in the healthcare industry
  • 5:59in the healthcare industry by now in
  • 6:11healthcare industries there are many
  • 6:12things like syringes gloves of doctors
  • 6:15then tablets all these things have to be
  • 6:19protected from the external environment
  • 6:21syringes cannot be corroded otherwise it
  • 6:23will cause harm to the patient all right
  • 6:26even when you talk about the glove
  • 6:27should not be made up of materials which
  • 6:29are reactive which you will react with
  • 6:31the atmosphere and get spoiled because
  • 6:33gloves are direct in direct contact with
  • 6:36the patient right so for all these
  • 6:38reasons
  • 6:38a stick is used because it is non
  • 6:40reactive so plastic is used in the
  • 6:42packaging of tablets syringes etc and
  • 6:52even in doctors gloves etc so I hope
  • 6:55you'll a clear with this reason as well
  • 6:57so these three reasons like because like
  • 6:59plastic is light cheap durable and
  • 7:2strong because it's a nonconductor and
  • 7:4because it is non reactive it becomes a
  • 7:7material of choice here we come to the
  • 7:9end of our session
