What is Cadmium Nitrate?

Cadmium was discovered and first time isolated by the Karl Samuel Leberecht Hermann and Friedrich Stromeyer in the year1817. In its elemental form, it has a silvery bluish gray metallic appearance. Cadmium nitrate formula is also termed as Cadmium (II) nitrate or Cadmium dinitrate formula. It is an inorganic crystalline compound that is colorless. It produces toxic cadmium oxide fumes on heating.

When exposed to this compound it causes severe irritation to the skin, respiratory tract, and eyes. Also, it damages the lungs leading to chest pain, shortness of breath. It can also cause damage to kidneys resulting in decreased renal function. It is a known carcinogen with an elevated risk to develop lung cancer.

Nitrate compounds are generally soluble in water. Nitrate materials are also a kind of oxidizing agent. While mixing with hydrocarbons, nitrate compounds can normally flammable mixture. Nitrates are excellent precursors to produce ultra-high purity compounds and certain catalysts and nanoscale materials. Cadmium Nitrate is generally immediately available in most of the volumes. Its high purity submicron and Nanopowder forms may be considered.

The nitrate anion is a univalent with -1 charge. It is a polyatomic ion of a single nitrogen atom ionically bound to three oxygen atoms. So, its formula is \(NO_3^{-1}\). Its total molecular formula weight is 62.05 units.

Uses of Cadmium Nitrate:

It is useful for coloring the glass and porcelain and also as a flash powder for photography.

Preparation:

We prepare it by dissolving cadmium metal or its oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate, in the nitric acid and then further crystallization. The chemical equations are:

\(CdO + 2HNO_3 \rightarrow Cd(NO_3)_2 + H_2O\)

\(CdCO_3 + 2 HNO_3 \rightarrow Cd(NO_3)_ + CO_2 + H_2O\)

\(Cd + 4 HNO_3 \rightarrow 2 NO_2 + 2 H_2O + Cd(NO_3)_2\)

Reactions:

Thermal dissociation at elevated temperatures produces the cadmium oxide and oxides of nitrogen. Also, when hydrogen sulfide is passed through the acidified solution of it, yellow cadmium sulfide is formed. With caustic soda solution, cadmium oxide forms the precipitate of cadmium hydroxide.

Solution: Some health hazards are:

  • Its contact with eyes causes irritation.
  • Also, inhalation of fumes of this compound can produce coughing, chest constriction, headache, nausea, vomiting, pneumonitis.
  • Chronic poisoning is possible by emphysema and kidney injury.
  • Its ingestion causes gastrointestinal disturbance and severe toxic symptoms.
  • Due to this, both kidney and liver injuries may occur.
