Methyl Acetate Formula

Methyl acetate is a carboxylate ester. It is a colourless volatile liquid. It has a pleasant odour and fleeting like the taste. And it may be a non-polar to weakly polar solvent. It is present in apple, grapes, banana, and other fruits. In this article, we will discuss the methyl acetate formula, its preparation, and various applications.

Methyl Acetate Formula

Methyl acetate is an acetate ester. It has a role as a polar solvent and inhibitor. And it includes a solubility of 25% in water at temperature. At elevated temperature, its solubility in water is much higher. And it is not stable within the presence of strong aqueous bases or aqueous acids.

  • Chemical Methyl Acetate Formula = C3H6O2
  • The simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) = CC(=O)OC IUPAC name = Methyl ethanoate

It is used as a solvent. And they are weakly polar and lipophilic. But, its close relative ester may be a more common solvent being less toxic and fewer soluble in water. It has characteristics very almost like its analogue ester. Within the presence of strong H2SO4 in an esterification reaction, snythesization occurs.

Preparation of Methyl Acetate

Production of it is completed within the industry norm. The carbonylation of methanol as a byproduct of the assembly of ethanoic acid helps to arrange methyl acetate. It also arises from the esterification of ethanoic acid with methanol. It arises within the presence of strong acids like vitriol. This production process is known due to the process of using reactive distillation.

CH3CO2CH3 + CO → (CH3CO)2O

This reaction takes place within the presence of varied catalysts. In the presence of strong bases like caustic soda or strong acids like acid or vitriol hydrolyzation of it into methanol and ethanoic acid, especially at elevated temperature. The conversion of it back to its components, by an acid, maybe a first-order reaction with reference to the ester. The reaction of methyl acetate and a base, for instance, caustic soda, maybe a second-order reaction with reference to both reactants.

Applications and Handling

Methyl Acetate Formula

A major use of methyl acetate is as a volatile low toxicity solvent in glues, paints, and nail enamel removers. Production of anhydride occurs with the assistance of carbonylation of methyl acetate during a process. It is a suggestion by chemists to store methyl acetate in closed bottles. It should keep far away from moisture, acidic vapours, and bases.

Due to its relatively low boiling point, it is best to stay it during a cool place, especially during summer. It is flammable. While it’s a slight skin irritant, it poses little toxicity. It is often safely burned, preferably outside. Hydrolysis yields ethanoic acid and methanol which may either be recovered or destroyed.

Solved Examples for Methyl Acetate Formula

Q] What’s the Fischer esterification method to make methyl acetate?

Solution; Anhydrous methanol and glacial ethanoic acid undergoes Fischer esterification. A catalyst like vitriol and iron(III) sulfate is additionally useful during this process. The method takes place under reflux. After the end of the reaction, neutralization of ethanoic acid occurs with the assistance of bicarbonate of soda. If required, it is often further purified via fractionated distillation.
