1: Why Deforestation?

The vanishing of forests is referred to as deforestation

1.1: Land to be improved:

The British considered that forest as unproductive by 19 century, they began to bring the forest land under cultivation so that revenue and agriculture revenue could benefit them.

1.2: Sleepers on the Tracks:

Wooden planks placed crossways railway tracks; they clamp the tracks in position

1.3: Plantations:

One type of tree was planted in rows. This is termed as a plantation.

2: The Rise of Commercial Forestry:

Commercial forestry targets to get maximum production of timber, fuelwood, and other forest products as a business enterprise.

2.1: How were the Lives of People Affected?

As a result, many communities have to displace from their home in the forest.

2.2: How did Forest Rules Affect Cultivation?

Forest rules improved the cultivation a lot.

2.3: Who could Hunt?

British believed that by killing animals, the British would civilize India, they gave reward for killing such animals.

2.4: New Trades, New Employments, and New Services:

After the forest department took control of the forests, some people benefited from the other new opportunities that had opened up in trade. Communities left their traditional occupations, began trading in forest products

3: Rebellion in the Forest:

Forest communities of India the world rebelled against the changes that were being imposed on them.

3.1: The People of Bastar:

The people of Bastar rebelled in 1910 opposite the British.

3.2: The Fears of the People:

The people of Bastar worried when the colonial government proposed to reserve forest in 1905 and stop shifting cultivation.

4: Forest Transformations in Java: In Java Indonesia the place where Dutch started forest management same as British they wanted Timber from Java to build ships.

4.1: The Woodcutters of Java:

The Kalanga of Java was a community, who was skilled forest cutters and shifting cultivators.

4.2: Dutch Scientific Forestry:

The Dutch launched forest laws in Java, which was restricting villager’s access to forests.

4.3: Samin’s Challenge:

In 1890, Surontiko Samin of Randublatung village, a teak forest village, started questioning state ownership of the forest. He argued that the government had not made the wind, water, earth, and wood, so it could not own it. This idea widespread among those who helped organize it was Saminís sons-in-law.

4.4: War and Deforestation:

The First World War and the Second World War gave a major effect on forests.

4.5: New Developments in Forestry:

Since the 1980s, governments across Asia and Africa have started but it has resulted in many conflicts.
