Solved Questions from RD Sharma Solutions for Class 10 Maths

Question 1: The following equation is a quadratic equation.
x2+6x−4=0(state true or false)

A. True

B. False

Answer:

A quadratic equation is an equation of the second degree, meaning it contains at least one term that is squared.

⇒  The give equation is x2 +6x−4=0

⇒  Comparing the given equation with  the standard form of quadratic equation ax2+bx+c=0.

⇒  We get, a=1,b=6 and c=−4

∴  The given equation x2+6x−4=0 is quadratic equation is true.

 Question 2: Ten students of class X took part in Mathematics quiz. If the number of girls is 4 more than the number of boys. Represent this situation algebraically.

Answer:

Formulation:

Let the number of girls is x and the number of boys is y. It is given that a total of ten students took part in the quiz.

∴ Number of girls + Number of boys =10
i.e., x+y=10

It is also given that the number of girls is 4 more than the number of boys.
∴ Number of girls = Number of boys +4
i.e., x=y+4
or, x−y=4

Algebraic Representation:

Thus, the algebraic representation of the given situation is
x+y=10       (i)
x−y=4         (ii)

Question 3: Write the first five terms of each of the following sequences whose nth terms are: an     = 3n +2

Answer:

The nth term of the sequence is

an        = 3n+2……………….eq(1)

1)  for finding the first term of sequence (a1)  put n=1 in eq(1)

a1=3×1+2

⟹a1=3+2

⟹a1 =5

2) for finding the second term of sequence (a2) put n=2 in eq(1)

a2 =3×2+2

⟹ a2  =6+2

⟹ a2 =8

3) for finding the third term of sequence (a3) put n=3 in eq(1)

a3=3×3+2

⟹ a3  =9+2

⟹ a3  =11

4) for finding the fourth term of sequence (a4) put n=4 in eq(1)

a4 =3×4+2

⟹ a4 =12+2

⟹ a4 =14

5) for finding the fifth term of sequence (a5) put n=5 in eq(1)

a5 =3×5+2

⟹ a5  =15+2

⟹ a5=17

Question 4: An unbiased die is thrown. What is the probability of getting an even number.

Answer:

exhaustive number of cases =6

including, 1,2,3,4,5,6

2,4,6 even numbers

probability of getting an even number = \(\frac {3}{}6}\)  = \(\frac{1}{2}\)
