Electronic Configuration of Iron

Iron, a transition element in Periodic Group VIII, is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust in terms of mass, and the second most abundant element on Earth. It bears the chemical symbol Fe (from the Latin word “Ferrum”) and the atomic number 26. Iron has oxidation states ranging from -2 to +6. Let us look at the electronic configuration of iron in the article below.

Electronic Configuration of Iron

Electronic Configuration of Iron is – 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d6

Reduced Electronic Configuration of Iron is – [Ar] 3d6 4s2

Electronic Configuration of Iron

The initial two electrons in the electron configuration for Iron will be in the 1s orbital. Because the 1s orbital can only hold two electrons, the next two electrons for Iron are in the 2s orbital. The following six electrons will enter the 2p orbital. The p orbital has a capacity of six electrons. Six electrons will be placed in the 2p orbital, followed by two electrons in the 3s orbital.

Because the 3s are now full, we will move to the 3p and deposit the following six electrons. The remaining two electrons are now placed in the 4s orbital. We end with 3d6 after filling the 4s orbital with the remaining six electrons. Hence the electronic configuration – 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d6

Iron exists in two oxidation states: +3 and +2. The +2 state is obtained by giving the 4s electron pair, while the +3 state is obtained by donating the lone pair electron of the 3d orbital in addition to the 4s electron pair. Fe2+ has the electronic configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d6 while Fe3+ has the electronic configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5. When compared to the electronic configuration of Fe, Fe2+ has two fewer electrons while Fe3+ has three fewer electrons.

Valency of Iron

Valence electrons are a single outer shell electron in an atom that is responsible for the chemical properties of the atom. An element’s valency is the number of electrons it receives, gives away, or shares in order to achieve a noble gas or stable configuration. In layman’s terms, the number of electrons an element can receive, lose, or share in order to fill its outermost electron shell completely.

As previously stated, iron has two valence states: +3 and +2. As a result, when it gives up the two 4s electrons, it gains a valency of +2. Iron can also give up either of the paired electrons from a 3d orbital in specific instances. As a result, unpaired electrons fill the entire 3d orbital, resulting in a more stable structure. In this case, the valency of iron will be +3. These 4s and 3d orbitals have comparable energies. As a result, in some situations, iron loses 2 electrons from its outer 4s orbital while simultaneously losing an electron from its inner 3d orbital. As a result, the iron ion possesses two or three positive charges – Fe2+ and Fe3+.

Applications of Iron

Residential Uses

Iron alloys have a high resistance to corrosion and rust formation. It may also be easily bent to create a variety of shapes. This is why iron is used in the majority of the things that you see around the house. Wrought iron is being used in a variety of outdoor goods to improve the appearance of the garden and terrace. Cast iron is another essential type of iron that is used to make pans, pots, ovens, skillets, and trays. Additionally, cast iron contains a heating ingredient that is ideal for cooking products, kitchenware, and other accessories. Furthermore, stainless steel is used in kitchen utensils and many electrical gadgets.

Industrial Applications

Bridges, skyscrapers, buildings, and other types of construction projects would be completed if their structures did not include iron. Iron is utilized in the fabrication of metal items, buildings, the manufacture of toys and goods, and in the manufacturing of transportation equipment. Ferric chloride, an iron compound, is used in wastewater treatment plants to remove pollutants from water.

Surgical equipment is made from stainless surgical steel, often known as inox steel. As modern reagents, nitrates and iron chloride are used. The fungicide makes use of iron sulphate. They are commonly used in the construction of large boats, automobiles, other machine devices, and machine parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why is the electrical configuration of Iron important to understand?

Answer. Notation for Electronic Configuration:

  • Shows how electrons must be positioned around an atom’s nucleus.
  • Helps everyone, especially chemists, comprehend how elements form chemical bonds.
  • It is possible to write The configuration can be written using the periodic table or an electron configuration chart.

Q2. What does an element’s electronic configuration indicate?

Answer. An object’s electronic configuration is a symbolic depiction of how its atoms’ electrons are distributed in different atomic orbital atoms. When writing an electron adjustment, a fixed notation is used in which the energy level and type of orbital are first entered, and then the number of electrons present in the orbital specified in the superscript is recorded.
