Surface Areas and Volumes

Surface Area and Volume Chart for Students and Children

What is the Surface Area and Volume Chart?

Surface area refers to a measure of the total area occupied by the surface of a solid. Furthermore, volume refers to a quantity of a three-dimensional space whose enclosure takes place by a closed surface. A surface area and volume chart play a significant role in properly understanding surface area and volume.

Surface volume and volume chart is a chart that provides information about the surface areas and volumes of various figures. With the presence of this chart, students will be better able to compare the surface areas and volume formulas for different figures. Furthermore, the students will be able to better memorize the surface and volume formulas of different shapes available. Moreover, this chart will be extremely useful for quick revision of the various formulas as they will be available efficiently in one place.

How to Make Surface Area and Volume Chart?

It is quite essential to prepare a surface and volume chart for efficient analysis. The basic layout of such a chart will be pretty straightforward. Simply draw a chart with three columns. The first column is for the type of shape, the second is for the surface area formula and third for the volume formula.

Furthermore, the student must mention the name of the figure or shape in the first column and then mention its respective surface area and volume formulas. Moreover, the various important shapes are cone, cube, cylinder, prism, pyramid, rectangular solid, regular pyramid, right cone, right cylinder, right prism, and sphere.

Definition of Some Important Terms

A 3D solid refers to a closed, three-dimensional shape. Its examples are cubes, spheres, and pyramids. A face of a 3D solid happens to be a polygon that is bound by edges, which are the line segments whose formation takes place when faces meet.

A cube refers to a rectangular prism with six congruent, square faces. In a cube, all the sides are equal. Example of a cube is Rubik’s cube.

A sphere is the set of all points in three dimensions such that they are equidistant from any point. In contrast, a hemisphere refers to one-half a sphere, its surface area includes the circular cross-section.

A prism refers to a 3D solid with two congruent, opposite faces with all other faces parallelograms. Examples of prisms include rectangular, cubes, triangular, hexagonal,  and octagonal prisms.

A right cylinder refers to a 3D solid that has two circular, opposite faces (bases) as well as parallel sides that connect the circles. Furthermore, if one takes any cross-section of a cylinder, it results in the production of another circle congruent to the base.

A pyramid refers to a 3D solid with one polygon for a base (triangular, square, hexagonal – there are no limits mathematically) such that all other faces happen to be triangles. The Great Pyramid of Giza is certainly a good example of a pyramid.

A cone refers to a pyramid that has a circular base. Furthermore, a cone has only one vertex and one face. Moreover, its height is the perpendicular measure from base to the vertex. Also, the cone has a slant height that refers to the distance from base to vertex along the lateral surface.

Solved Question for You

Question- What is the importance of the surface area and volume chart?

Answer- The surface area and volume chart will make it easy for students to compare the surface areas and volume formulas for many types of shapes or figures. Furthermore, students will be able to efficiently memorize the surface and volume formulas of various shapes. Also, this chart facilitates quick revision of the various formulas available by presenting them at one place.
