Solved Questions for You

Question 1: Give two examples of each:
(a) Kharif crop
(b) Rabi crop

Answer: Depending upon their growing season, Indian crops are classified as Rabi and Kharif crops.

  1. a) The crops, sown at the beginning of the rainy season (June-July), are known as Kharif crops or summer season crops. Examples- rice, groundnut.
  2. b) The crops which are sown at the beginning of winter (October-November) are known as Rabi or winter season crops. Examples- wheat, gram.

Question 2: Explain how fertilisers are different from manure.

Answer:  Manure is obtained by decomposition of waste products of plants, animals and other natural materials in fields which make it rich in organic matter. Fertilizers are the inorganic chemical substances that serve as a source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and lack organic matter.

Fertilizers are produced in factories. Since manure consists of nutrients in small quantities, large servings of manure are required by plants. On the other hand, is rich in nutrients, fertilizers are required in small quantities. Being organic in nature, manures are ecofriendly while wash off of fertilizers to water bodies causes water pollution. Excessive use of fertilizers also makes the soil infertile.

Question 3: What are weeds? How can we control them?

Answer: Weeds are unwanted and uncultivated plants that grow with crops and compete with crops for nutrients and can also cause crop toxification. Weeding is the removal of weeds and is mostly done before flowering begins in crop plants. It is done using a trowel, harrow or weedicides. The trowel is used in manual removal of weeds. Ploughing/tilling of the soil, before seed sowing, using plough or cultivar followed by breaking the leftover soil crumps using leveller also removes the weeds. Similarly, use of weedicides, the chemicals that control the growth of weeds, is also practised.

Question 4: If wheat is sown in the Kharif season, what would happen? Discuss.

Answer:  Wheat is a Rabi/winter season crop which is sown at the beginning of winter (October to November). Basic climatic requirements for the wheat crop are moderate temperature conditions, no waterlogging and frost-free days. It requires water supply during flowering and before tilling only. If wheat is sown during Kharif season (summers), months of higher temperatures (May-June) and excessive water supply during the rainy season would adversely affect the crop productivity.
