NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 4
Our app is presenting the NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Science Chapter 4 Structure of the Atom in a very simple and systematic way. This is a very important topic in chemistry. Different diagrams and theories with explanations will definitely help them to grasp the concept for better utilization in solving the problems and doing their homework.
Let us discuss the sub-topics in detail.
4.1: Charged particles in the matter:
The student will know about the fact that atoms were composed of protons and electrons. These are the charged particles in matter.
4.2: The structure of an atom:
The student will learn the structure of the atom. J.J. Thomson was the first one to propose this model for the atom. Then the model of Rutherford will explain the atomic structure.
4.2.1: Thomson’s model of an atom:
Thomson proposed a very famous model of an atom be similar to that of a Christmas pudding.
4.2.2: Rutherford’s model of an atom:
Rutherford gave his model and he discovered the nucleus of an atom with the gold foil experiment
4.2.3: Bohr’s model of an atom:
Neils Bohr put forward with his postulates about the model of an atom.
4.2.4: Neutrons:
Chadwick discovered another subatomic particle with no charge and a mass nearly equal to that of a proton. These were neutrons.
4.3: How are electrons distributed in different orbits (shells)?
Bohr and Bury have suggested the distribution of electrons into different orbits of an atom.
4.4: Valency:
An atom of each element has a specific combining capacity which is called its valency.
4.5: Atomic number and mass number:
The student will learn two very fundamental properties of the atom of any element in this topic.
4.5.1: Atomic number:
It is the number of protons in an atom, which determines its atomic number.
4.5.2: Mass number:
Protons and neutrons are also called nucleons because they are present within the nucleus. So, the mass of an atom resides in its nucleus.
4.6: Isotopes:
There is a number of atoms of some elements which have the same atomic number but different mass numbers. These are isotopes.
4.6.1: Isobars:
Atoms of different elements with different atomic numbers may have the same mass number. These are known as isobars.
