Bare vs. Bear

Homophones sound in the same way but are spelled in different ways. People often have confusion with the homophone pairs. Bare vs. bear is also a similar pair of confusing words. Besides being the name of a big furry animal, the bear is also used as a verb. It’s usual meaning to tolerate or to carry something. On the other hand, Bare functions as an adjective or sometimes as a verb.

Bear is one of the most usual and nouns which refers to the large wild animal. Everyone can recognize it. In the verb form, it refers to “accepting” or “supporting” like meaning. “Bare”, on the other hand, is an adjective referring to something “not covered” or “not dressed up”, while as a verb it illustrates the action of uncovering or revealing of something covering a surface.

When to use “Bear”?

As noun:

It is used as a noun when it defines the large, furry, strong wild animal.

For example- I saw a big bear in the forest last night.

As verb:

It fits in any sentence as a verb, when we need to express the acceptance of something which may be unpleasant. Also, it supports a certain weight or the action of carrying something.

For example – I can’t bear those old men with such stupid behaviors.

Incorrect: The grizzly bare seemed friendly, but we all kept a proper distance.

Correct: The grizzly bear seemed friendly, but we all kept a proper distance.

Incorrect: The backpack weighed thirty kilograms, which is a heavy burden to bare.

Correct: She could hardly bear the thought of selling her beloved vintage car.

When do we use “Bare”?

This word is basically used as the adjective and used to describe something which is uncovered. Occasionally, it is also used as the synonym for the word “basic”. This word can also be used with the same meaning as a verb. But it is referring to the action of taking away something which covers an object in order to expose it.

Incorrect: It was too cold to go outside with bear arms yesterday.

Correct: It was too cold to go outside with bare arms yesterday.

Incorrect: The cupboard was bear in my house.

Correct: The cupboard was bare in my house.
