Solved Questions from RD Sharma Solutions for Class 8 Maths

Question 1:  Find the length of the longest rod that can be placed in a room 12 meters long, 9 meters broad and 8 meters high.

Answer:

The length of the longest rod in a room = the length of the diagonal of the room

= Square Root of (122 + 92 + 82)

= Square Root of (144 + 81 + 64)

= 17 meters.

Question 2: A rectangular piece is 20 m long and 15 m wide. Form its four corners, quadrants of radii 3.5 m have been cut. Find the area of the remaining part.

Answer:

Here,

  • l=20m
  • b=15cm
  • r=3.5m
  • θ=90°

∴ Area of rectangle = l×b = (20×15) =300m2

Also, the area of a quadrant = (θ/360) × πr2
= (90/360) × (22/7) × 3.5 × 3.5

∴ Area of a quadrant = 9.625 m2

⇒ Area of all 4 quadrants = 4×9.625 = 38.5m2

Therefore, area of remaining part = Area of the rectangle – Area of all 4 quadrants

= 300−38.5

∴ Area of remaining part = 261.5m2

Question 3: The percentage of various categories of workers in a state is given in the following table. Represent the information given in the form of a pie chart.

Category of workers Cultivators Agricultural labors Industrial Workers Commercial Workers Others
Percentage 40% 25% 12.5% 10% 12.5%

Answers:

Question 4: A die is thrown. Find the probability of getting: 2 or 4

Answer:

When a dice is thrown we get the following outcomes

S={1,2,3,4,5,6}

n(S)=6

∴ The probability of getting 2 is 1/6 [as there is only one 2]

Also, the probability of getting 4 is 1/6 [since there is only one 4]

However, the probability of getting 2 or 4 = 1/6 + 1/6 = 2/6 = 1/3
