Solved Questions from RD Sharma Solutions for Class 9 Maths

Question 1:  Factorise the given polynomial expression: a3 + a – 3a2 – 3

Answer: Rearranging the expression, we get:

a3 – 3a2 + a – 3

= a2(a – 3) + 1(a – 3)

= (a – 3) (a2 + 1)

∴ a3 + a – 3a2 – 3 = (a – 3) (a2 + 1)

Question 2: Identify constant, linear, quadratic and cubic polynomials from the following polynomial: p(a)=2a2 − a + 4.

Answer: The degree of p(a) is 2. Therefore, this is a quadratic polynomial.

Question 3: Express the following linear equation in the form ax+by+c=0 and indicate the values of a,b and c in each case:
−2x+3y=12.

Answer:

We can write −2x+3y=12 as −2x+3y-12=0

Comparing the given equation with ax+by+c=0, we get:

a = -2

b = 9

c = -12

Question 4: The external dimensions of a closed wooden box are 48cm,36cm,30cm. The box is made of 1.5cm thick wood. How many bricks of size 6cm×3cm×0.75cm can be put in this box?

Answer:

The volume of the box = (48 – 3) × (36 – 3) × (30 – 3) = 38880 cm3

Please note that we subtracted ‘3’ because we have the outer dimensions of the box and the thickness of the wood is 1.5 cm. Therefore, to get the inner dimensions of the box, we need to subtract the thickness of the wood from the outer dimensions of the box.

The volume of a brick = 6 × 3 × 0.75 = 1.35 cm3

The the number of bricks = 38880/13.5 = 2970
