Q 1. Does short-sightedness or long-sightedness imply necessarily that the eye has partially lost its ability of accommodation? What might cause the defects of vision?

Solution:- A myopic or hypermetropic person can also possess the normal ability of accommodation of the eye lens. Myopia occurs when the eye-balls get elongated from front to back. Hypermetropia occurs when the eye-balls get shortened. When the eye loses its ability of accommodation, the defect is called presbyopia.

Q 2. A person is looking at another person wearing a shirt with a pattern comprising of vertical and horizontal lines. He is able to see the vertical lines more distinctly than the horizontal ones. What is this defect due to?

Solution:- The person is suffering from Astigmatism. It is a defect caused due to the imperfection. In this defect, a person is able to focus objects within one direction only.

Q 3. The far point of a myopic person is 80 cm in front of the eye. What is the nature and power of the lens required to correct the problem?

Solution:- The person is suffering from myopia and hence need a concave lens to correct the defect. The lens should be such that an object at infinity must form its image at the far point

Hence, f= -80 cm

P=1/f = 1/(-0.8) = -1.25D

Q 4. Why is a normal eye not able to see clearly the objects placed closer than 25 cm?

Solution:- Ciliary muscles contract and expand to change the focal length of the eye lens so that it is able to see objects at variable distances. However, too much contraction lays a lot of stress on the eye muscles and when objects are closer than the near point, the eye is unable to focus its image on the retina.
