CBSE Class 10 Social Science Chapter 8 – Novels, Society and History NCERT Solutions
This chapter will start with how and when novels started. Then we will see who started writing novels, what were the famous novels back then, and how was the publishing market. We will also see how did novel came to India, and who were the famous Indian novel writers back then.Â
Novels started in the 17th century. It started in England and France. The demand for novels was increased drastically in the 18th century. When the demand increased writers started writing more and more. The earning of writers was also increasing.
By seeing an increase in demand, writers also started trying and experimenting with different writing styles.
But the novels were very costly in those days, and common men were not able to afford it. One of the most famous novels back then was – Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones (1749). Charles Dickens’ Pickwick Paper in 1836 was the very first novel which was printed in the magazine. It was something new for everyone, and people were relating to the character and deeply involved in it.
In the eighteenth century, even women started writing novels. Women started expressing their emotions, pain, feelings through these novels. Charlotte Bronte’s (1816-1855) Jane Eyre is about an independent girl who is against hypocrisy and injustice. This was one of the best-selling novels of those days.
The novel came in India after the 19th century. In India, people used to write novels in various languages. The first novel was written in Bengali and Marathi.Â
