Introduction

1.1: Suryamani’s Story
The initial phase of the chapter talks about a girl Suryamani was in love with the forests. Her life completely revolves around forests becomes the highlight of this chapter. The chapter tells us how she used to always take up the path of forests while going to work. She used to take the kids to the forests for enhancing their knowledge about the forests.
1.2: Farming in Mizoram
This topic too starts with the story of a girl who is always ready to go to forests. In Mizoram, the forest land belongs to the whole village and a system of the lucky draw was used in order to select the family which would get an opportunity to do the farming on the forest area.
1.3: Jhoom Farming
At last, the chapter tries to end with describing a new method of farming i.e., Jhoom Farming. Jhoom farming is a very interesting way of farming. After cutting one crop, the land is left as it is for some time say for a year. Nothing is grown there. The bamboo or weeds which raise on that land are not taken out.
