NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Biology Chapter 14
An Ecosystem is a functional unit of Nature, where living organisms interact amongst themselves and also with the surroundings. In NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Biology Chapter 14, you will learn different aspects of the Ecosystem. Let us now discuss the subtopics covered in this chapter.
- Ecosystem – Structure, and Function:
All ecosystems consist of basic components such as Abiotic components and Biotic components. Abiotic components are the organic/inorganic elements and compounds such as oxygen, water, soil, phosphates, and calcium carbonates. Biotic components include all living organisms present in the environmental system. The functions of an ecosystem are the organization of Abiotic and Biotic components, regulation of all the essential ecological processes and maintaining the energy flow and nutrient cycle in the ecosystem.
- Productivity:
The rate of biomass production is called productivity. Primary productivity is the rate at which the energy accumulates in the producers. The rates at which the heterotrophic organisms resynthesize the energy-yielding substances are called secondary productivity.
- Decomposition:
Decomposition in the ecosystem is the breakdown of complex organic matter by decomposers to inorganic raw materials like carbon dioxide, water, and various nutrients.
- Energy Flow:
Energy flow is also called the calorific flow. It refers to the flow of energy through a food chain that maintains the flow of energy through different trophic levels in an ecosystem.
- Ecological Pyramids:
It is a graphic representation of the relationship between organisms at various trophic levels in a food chain. The ecological pyramid is based on biomass, energy, and number.
- Ecological Succession:
It is a phenomenon through which the changes occur in ecological communities. It is of two types, Primary succession, and Secondary succession
- Nutrient Cycling:
The nutrient cycle is the movement and exchange of organic and inorganic matter back into the production of living matter.
- Ecosystem Services:
Those ecosystems that provide services such as pollination of crops, prevention of soil erosion and water purification, and goods including food, wood, animals, etc.
