Solved Examples

Q. Statement: The best evidence of India’s glorious past is the growing popularity of ayurvedic medicines in the world.

Assumptions.
1. Ayurvedic medicines are more popular in India.
2. Ayurvedic medicines are not popular in India.

One the types of questions asked in statements and assumptions are as above. In the statement, you can see the information about the popularity of ayurvedic medicines is given in the world and how India’s past was glorious.

But in both the assumptions, there is no mention of this relation. In fact, the assumptions talk about whether the ayurvedic medicines are popular in India or not. And thus there is no relationship established between the statement and the assumptions. Further, the assumptions are not implicit to suggest anything about India’s past. So neither 1 nor 2 assumption is implicit. Thus the correct answer is C.

Q. Statement: “If you want your advertisement to reach more people, give it in newspaper Z,” B tells A.

Assumptions.
1. Newspaper Z has a much wider circulation.
2. A wants to publicise her products.

In statements and assumptions questions, try and concentrate on the conjunctions used in the statements or answers. They can completely change the meaning of the sentence.

Here, in this sentence ‘if’ denotes that A may or may not be ready to publicise her products. Further, the statement gives an impression that the advertisement should be done through the newspaper Z. So this implies that Z will be able to advertise the news better. Indirectly this means that the newspaper Z has a wider circulation which is suggested in the option 1. So the correct answer is A.

Example with Three Assumptions

Q. Statement: Ram wrote a second letter to his father after a couple of months as he did not receive the reply to his first letter.

Assumptions.
1. Ram’s father promptly sends a reply to his letter.
2. His father did not receive the letter.
3. The letter usually takes a week to reach.

A) 1 and 2 are implicit.
B) Only 1 is implicit.
C) All are implicit.
D) Only 1 and 2 are implicit.
E) None of these.

Based on the sentence you cannot say with authority that Ram’s father did not receive the letter. Also, it suggests that there may be other reasons for the delay in reply. The time limit of the letter is also nowhere mentioned in the statement. Thus, statements 2 and 3 are not implicit. Assumption 1 implies that Ram’s father used to respond to him immediately and that is why after waiting for the reply Ram must have again written the letter. So that assumption is implicit. So, the correct answer is B.
