Selecting Words

Selecting Words is a subsection of the verbal reasoning section of the IBPS and SBI exams. In this section, the vocabulary will be thoroughly checked. You will have a few sentences or questions that have a few words or at least one word missing from them. The more examples that are solved in this section, the better. Here we will see many examples decided into type I and type II difficulty level. Let’s begin.

Selecting Words

In the following sections, we will see different levels of difficulty for the selecting words section. The sentences will have articles, nouns, verbs or any other parts of them removed. In the options, there will be only one option that can make the sentence grammatically correct. In other words, the sentence has to be coherent. Let us see one example.

Example 1: The grapes in the vineyard were …… enough to be picked.

A) good               B) grown              C) ripe               D) mature

Answer: The word that we use to signify that fruits are ready is ripe. Therefore, the correct sentence here is that the grapes in the vineyard were ripe enough to be picked.

Let us see similar examples that have been divided into two categories based on their level of complexity.

Type I

Example 2: To err is ……, to forgive divine.

A) godly        B) human           C) bovine        D) natural

Answer: It is a famous quote from Shakespear – “To err is human, to forgive divine”. Hence the correct option is B) human.

Selecting Words

Example 3: The boy is …….. small to be playing cricket.

A) very           B) highly           C) too           D) still

Answer: The correct sentence is “The boy is too small to be playing cricket“. Therefore the correct option is C) too.

Example 4: A rolling stone gathers no …….

A) mass           B) moss         C) mess              D) musk

Answer: The correct sentence is “A rolling stone gathers no moss”. Therefore the correct option is B) moss.

Example 5: The boy was riding his cycle on the pavement when suddenly the car pulled over and he fell …….. suddenly.

A) of           B) from               C) off                D) to

Answer: The correct sentence is “The boy was riding his cycle on the pavement when suddenly the car pulled over and he fell off suddenly.” Hence the correct option is C) off.

Example 6: The girl was frightened by the ………. of cows that came running towards her.

A) group               B) number                   C) herd                  D) bunch

Answer: The correct sentence is “The girl was frightened by the herd of cows that came running towards her.” Therefore the correct option is C) herd.

Example 7: The bowler is one of the best in his State. He clearly is ………… to his team.

A) an asset            B) a boon           C) a bane             D) a gift

Answer: The correct sentence is “The bowler is one of the best in his State. He clearly is an asset to his team.” Therefore the correct option is A) an asset.

Type II

Example 8: What is the …………. for a letter here?

A) cost             B) postage            C) fare                    D) charge

Answer: The correct sentence is “What is the postage for a letter here”. Hence the correct option is B) postage.

Example 9: You can’t describe a method in physics that …………. the possibility of all error.

A) escalates                  B) explains                  C) exclaims           D) excludes

Answer: The correct sentence is “You can’t describe a method in physics that excludes the possibility of all error.” The correct option is D) excludes.

Example 10: The paths of glory lead ………. to the grave.

A) always                    B) must                C) both                D) but

Answer: The correct sentence is “The paths of glory lead but to the grave.” This is a famous saying and thus the correct option is D) but.

Example 11: The French …… reputed to have a very good taste for wine and music.

A) are              B) is               C) are             D) will be

Answer: The correct sentence is “The French are reputed to have a very good taste for wine and music.” Therefore the correct option is A) are.

Example 12: He was wearing many layers of woollen clothes ………. he should feel cold.

A) let               B) leap           C) lest              D) lost

Answer: The correct sentence is “He was wearing many layers of woollen clothes lest he should feel cold.” Therefore the correct option is C) lest.

Example 13: They called a person to ……… the door.

A) bend           B) mend             C) spend               D) resuscitate

Answer: The correct sentence is “They called a person to mend the door”. Therefore the correct option here is B) mend.

Example 14: It has been 20 years since I last ……….. her.

A) see               B) have seen             C) had seen            D) saw

Answer: The correct sentence will be “It has been 20 years since I last saw her”. Therefore the correct option is D) saw.

Ans: A) intensive

Ans: B) irrelevant
