Dinitrogen Monoxide Formula

Dinitrogen Monoxide is also popular as nitrous oxide. It is an inorganic compound with an easy chemical formula. It is colorless and inflammable at the room temperature. Also, it acts as a powerful oxidizer and hence quite similar to the oxygen molecule. In this short article, let us discuss the dinitrogen monoxide formula with examples. Its properties and uses are also available in this article. Let us discuss it!

Dinitrogen Monoxide Formula

Concept of Dinitrogen Monoxide

At room temperature, it has a colorless and inflammable appearance. It also has a slight taste and scent of the metals. It acts as a powerful oxidizer and is similar to molecular oxygen at increased temperatures.

In 1772, English chemist Joseph Priestley first synthesized this gas. It is famous for its use in aesthetic purposes. It has a number of recognized negative effects on human health. Also, it is breathing in or contact with skin or eyes is harmful. It is useful in rocket propellants and in motor racing in order to increase the power output of engines.

There are small amounts of Dinitrogen Monoxide in the atmosphere present. It is found to be a main scavenger of the stratospheric ozone. 30% of these are due to human activity, primarily agriculture. This gas is commonly found in pressurized metal canisters.

We may have seen these metal canisters lying around in streets outside bars and nightclubs. Ninety-nine percent of its elimination from the body is only through the lungs without affecting other body organ systems.

The formula for Dinitrogen Monoxide:

Its chemical formula is;

\(N_2O\)

Its chemical equation is:

\(2 N_2 + O_2 \rightarrow 2 N_2O\)

Properties:

Its melting point is -88.48 degree C. And its boiling point is -90.86 degree C. Its density is 1.98 kg per cubic cm. It is non-flammable, however, it can support combustion. (If placed near an open flame, will burn brighter.)

It is highly insoluble in blood and water (resulting in quick absorption and elimination by the patient). It is not metabolized through the liver It is heavier than air with a specific gravity of 1.53.

Dinitrogen monoxide Uses:

Nitrous oxide can be useful to treat pain. It also works as a mild sedative. Therefore, it is sometimes used before dental procedures to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. Nitrous oxide gas works fast as a sedative, but it has no long-term effects. It is safe. But like any other drug, its side effects may occur.  Some other uses are:

  • Reduce untoward movement and reaction during the dental treatment process.
  • Enhances communication and patient cooperation.
  • Raise the patient’s pain reaction threshold naturally.
  • Aid in the treatment of the mentally/physically disabled patient.
  • Reduce gagging.
  • Potentiate the effects of sedatives.

Solved Examples

Q.1: Why Nitrous monoxide is popular as “laughing gas”?

Solution: Nitrous oxide slows down the brain and body’s responses. The effects of the drug vary depending on how much has been inhaled. Taking nitrous oxide may cause feelings of euphoria, relaxation, as well as calmness. Also, fits of giggles and laughter will occur and therefore its nickname is “laughing gas”.

Q.2: Calculate the molar mass of Dinitrogen monoxide:

Solution: Its chemical formula is:

\(N_2O\)

Its molar mass will be:

= \(2 \times 14.0067 + 15.999\)

= 44.0124 gram per mol.

So, molar mass of Dinitrogen monoxide is 44.0124 gram per mol.
