Difference Between Kinetics and Kinematics

In Physics, to deal with the motion of the objects two terms are frequently used. Kinetics and kinematics are the two areas of study. Both are dealing with the motion of an object, but still, there are some differences between them. This difference is having base on the cause of the motion. Actually, together they help the scientist to understand both “what factor” and “why factor” for the moving things. What is Kinetics?

This is the branch of physics, which deals specifically with analyzing the forces acting on an object. For example, dealing with rotational motion, we compute the torque. Thus in kinetics Newton’s laws of motion for example is useful to study the motion of objects. Therefore, while studying kinetics, we will typically draw the force diagrams using vector math to find values like net force and the direction of acceleration. Kinetics may be considered as the sub-category of classical mechanics known as forces.

What is Kinematics?

Kinematics is the branch of physics that deals with motion using mathematical descriptions like a set of equations of motion. Its definitions will explain the real-world objects and their movements. Thus, it requires a strong understanding of the mathematical concepts like vectors, a scalar. Not only this, but it also needs the concept of vector addition, as well as the physics measurements such as velocity, speed, distance, displacement, and acceleration. Actually, often the study of kinematics is of types one dimensional like linear motion and two dimensional like projectile motion. Hence, kinematics falls into the sub-category of fundamental mechanics, which is known as motion.

Kinetics:

It is focused on understanding the cause of different types of motions of any object. It includes the rotational motion in which the object experiences force or torque. Some real-life examples are friction, torque, gas kinetics, etc.

Kinematics:

It explains the terms like acceleration, velocity, and position of the objects while in motion. Here, the mass of the object is not considered while studying its motion. In other words, kinematics describes the way motion is happening. But, it doesn’t take into account the cause of the motion of the body. Some important parameters in kinematics are displacement, velocity, time, etc. Some popular examples of motion are vertical motion, horizontal motion, and projectile motion.

Both are important branches of mechanics. These two are helping the physicists to understand the nature of motion in different ways and hence to calculate different values depending on what they are studying. Therefore, we may also say that the two fields are complementing each other. It is a proven fact that, without kinetics, physicists may not be able to answer the many questions related to motion. For example, to find out the origin of the acceleration pulling a thrown ball back to the Earth, a physicist will need the equations as well as a solid understanding of forces.

Q.1: Explain the reason why it is more difficult to catch a cricket ball than the tennis ball.

Solution:  The cricket ball has a large momentum and hence high speed and hence acceleration. So, the cricket ball will exert a larger force on the hand during the catch. Therefore, it is difficult to catch a cricket ball.

Q.2: How kinetics and kinematics, both fit into classical mechanics?

Solution: Kinetics and kinematics both are dealing with the same scenario of motion in different ways. For example, to analyze the same scenario of the motion of baseball through the air can also apply the understanding of conservation of energy. This is also possible because it belongs to the sub-category of classical mechanics which is energy. Besides this, other main categories of study in classical mechanics are force and motion.
