Some Concepts & Definitions from CBSE Class 12 Physics Chapter 14Â Semiconductor Electronics
Q.1. What are the different types of Semiconductors?
Broadly speaking, there are three types of semiconductors:
- Elemental semiconductors: Semiconductors comprising of a single fourth group element. Examples: Si and Ge.
- Compound semiconductors: Semiconductors made of compounds of two or more elements. These can be further classified into:
- Inorganic: CdS, GaAs, InP, etc
- Organic: anthracene, doped phthalocyanines, etc
- Organic polymers: polypyrrole, polyaniline, etc
Q.2. Define Valence Band and Conductor Band
The valence band is the energy band consisting of valence (tightly-bound) electrons. The conduction band is the energy band consisting of conduction (loosely-bound) electrons.
Note:
1. Without any external energy, all electrons lie in the valence band.
2. For metals, conduction band, and valence band overlap.
3. In Si, outer orbit comprises of 2s, + 2p electrons. These 4 electrons have 8 available energy states of which 4 are in the valence band and 4 in the conduction band.
