Summary of Around the World

Around the World chapter is about the famous novel named ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’. As the name suggests, this chapter is about an Englishman who makes a bet with his friends that he can go around the world in 80 days. Thus, this story tells us about all the events which the protagonist experiences throughout his journey. The name of the Englishman is Phileas Fogg who is a lonesome man who lives with his servant whom he pays well. The servant was Jean Passepartout who serves as his companion on this world tour. Mr. Fogg is a rich man but no one knows the reason behind his richness. To fulfill his bet, Mr. Fogg sets out on his journey along with Passepartout. As a bank gets robbed, the detective, Mr. Fix suspects him and follows him. So, we learn about his journey with all these characters and chaos.

Around the World in English

A London gentleman, Phileas Fogg hires a French servant, Jean Passepartout, who dons many hats. Passepartout has experience in many jobs, even as a circus performer but now seeks a peaceful life. Mr. Fogg reads about a railroad in India which makes it possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He decides to take up this challenge by betting with his fellow members at a club for half his fortune. He then leaves at night with Passepartout as his companion.

Soon after he leaves, a man resembling Mr. Fogg robs a bank which makes him a suspect in Scotland Yard’s eyes due to his sudden departure. Thus, a detective, Mr. Fix is set behind him who befriends Passepartout on the way. They start their journey from San Francisco to New York, covering a three thousand seven hundred and eighty-six miles long distance. On this journey, their train crosses a lot of steep mountain slopes, deep canyons, curves, tunnels, and bridges as well.

All of a sudden, the train stops when a herd of buffaloes comes on the trade. Thus, this results in a three-hour-long delay as the herd takes this time to cross the tracks. Once again, the train starts moving and heads for the steep mountains. It was the most different part of their journey as it had winding roads. The highest point of their journey comes at 7524 feet above sea level which they pass. After that, in a matter of a few hours, they come out of the Rocky Mountains.

The train stops once again as the cables of the suspension bridge on Medicine River break. However, the river crosses it at maximum speed. On the next day, when the train moves forward, hundreds of Scour Indians attack the train. However, they flee when they see the soldiers running towards them.

This story tells us about the exciting journey of Mr. Foggs and Passepartout around the world and how they experience so many different things and meet new people.
